European Super League - Dead on arrival

I think they are all connected though.... The FA is part of UEFA that is part of FIFA.

Not that I'm aware of, the FA follows FIFA/UEFA rules but is a separate UK entity

Not that it would matter, if they were the same it would be even a worse court case, i.e.
- We want your private business to only do business with our subsidiaries on pain of penalty to our existing business.

I'm confused by your argument here. Are you suggesting that the ESL was a smokescreen to get the new CL format through?
Yep
Partly
It’s cost them nothing really
And low and behold there all set now in Europe
Hence how it got leaked the day before the announcement

The top clubs are opposed to the new format.
They don't want more games against nothing opponents. That doesn't earn them money. There's no motive for them to create a smokescreen.

That’s your view and that’s fine
They now get more games and more income so I don’t believe their unhappy

It's their view as well, several are on the record as being against the new format.

They don't want additional games against Shakhtar Donetsk and their ilk and that's what the new format provides.

Top clubs/owner/investors want

- Protection for their investment (they are literally putting in billions)
- More done to promote/raise profile of their games

UEFA like FIFA is trying to promote something completely at odds with the above

- Those clubs don't (and shouldn't) give a fudge about promoting the game in wherever (not top league)
- Games that aren't instantly regonizable (and more of them), is simply diluting the product (more B teams, less interesting games)
- 96 clubs is a lot of teams to share with.

CL is not viable in the long run, sooner or later some variant of ESL will be back and stick.

Course they say that
They also said they wanted their own league
They say many things but rarely tell the truth

Yep the new CL format is closer to that
It will happen
Fans may not want it but the owners don’t care for fans

Still have not heard a coherent reason fans are against it (other than the fans of the teams not included)

Something along the lines of mutter, mutter, integrity, mutter, save the pyramid, mutter, mutter.

From the pictures of the fans I saw, all of them looked delighted to be at a protest on TV. Taking selfish and showing off in front of their mates. It came at the wrong time at the end of a lockdown when the chav class were missing their wetherspoon and eating inside a Mcdonalds. So the was a pent up aggression.

The TV rights for the new format CL will be worth significantly less than the ESL would've got. No one wants to watch Krasnodar v Ferencvaros and that's what you'll get more of with the new format.
But that money won’t be going to the big clubs
The big clubs will sell out more games

I thought it was just me that didn’t understand what all the outrage was about

The only coherent argument against it (that I also agreed with) is the fact that the tournament had 75% ever present participants by birth right and only 25% participants by way of meritocracy. That then results in the 75% birth right participants having a huge level of income compared to every other club in European football, thus at a huge advantage in terms of winning everything in their domestic leagues, with the thousands of other clubs around Europe having no way to ever change the status quo.

The outrage is regarding the ring fencing of participation in the competition based on the clubs standing at the point in time they decided to create the competition.

Bizarely there has been a lot less outrage for the fact that money is distributed by co efficient ranking in the current CL and the new format will also allow for the co efficient to enable two teams to qualify ahead of teams finishing higher than them in their domestic leagues.

Spain’s top 3 is set in stone and tv rights tended to be swayed towards them, so maybe less outrage from there?

The big teams feel that they are the main draw for global viewers, so it’s like they are the home team with the big stadium, fan base and infrastructure but they have to give away a big % of the income they are generating to the away team, in effect twice when playing home and away.

The chairmen of the teams want to protect their forecasted income as CL is such a huge part of it.
They feel a concentrated league with more ‘big’ games will generate more cash, which means more can trickle down to the non participants but the non participants feel the gulf in income becomes wider and their chances of participation go from slim to none. They may also feel the new CL format means more padding games that benefit the tv companies by utilising their fan base and the smaller teams.

I’m sure we will some further changes to the CL structure with more subtlety, perhaps some form of subscription service that enables a distraction based on attributed viewers? So you can subscribe as a fan or neutral to the game? Even that doesn’t account for pubs! The co efficient will continue to be worked until it as good as guarantees qualification for the big teams.

At least the two coefficient places have something of a meritocracy about them.... I mean at least a club has to earn those coefficient points. Yes it is hard to break into the elite to be able to earn them, but at least it is possible (as we ourselves have proved over the last 10 years). In the ESL format it becomes impossible.
