Eric Dier

That'll be your short memory.
The only time he looked half decent was with Dembele or prime Wanyama next to him. Any other time he's been to be polite, average - a good player doesnt need top players next to him to look good. Dier evidently does....

Let’s get this right, we play a weakened team in a dead rubber away at Bayern and you single Sissoko.
You are potty!
I said multiple times in this thread and others that the pair of them were awful, you clearly aren't paying attention.

It's much more about Sissoko, whomever you pair him with in midfield the midfield will look slow, laden and a bit crap. Dier has some obvious weaknesses, you can hide them if you play him with a complimentary player, that player is not Sissoko.

If we keep playing this pair in midfield against any sort of decent opposition we will have performances like yesterday.

Sissoko is not good enough to be starting for a team that want to be challenging for the big trophies. However he is a far better than Dier (who is the weakest 'starting 11' player in our team by a fair margin). It should be pretty simple to improve on that position in January IMO. Let's hope Mourinho gets some funds to do so.

Or maybe he just needs to return to form after a long time out.
Problem is he was making the same sort of brain farts with his passing before his injury problems - I look forward to seeing how long the recovering from injury excuse is going to be rolled out for his performances....

Had as poor a game as the rest out there.

Did he? What about his 64% pass completion, which was only better than Moura and Gazzaniga (and significantly worse than Sissoko's 85%, for example)?

A lot of excuses being made for him in this thread by some - it's Sissoko's fault, or Eriksen's fault, or KWP or Rose's fault. Occam's razor boys - it's okay just to admit that Dier played very poorly, likely because of his own limitations and/or poor form. And it's nothing to do with him being a 'villain' - that's just lazy and defensive IMO.

I think its interesting that Dier is the one getting slated however Sissoko was as bad

Agree - but the difference is that Dier has been abysmal for the past month. People are saying he needs time to get up to scratch - which is fair comment. However he shows absolutely no evidence of improvement. He is spazzing simple 5 yard passes and leaving massive gaps in front of the defence he is supposed to be protecting.

No one seems to have answer the question... how long can we afford to carry a passenger in the team in the hope he will regain his old form?

his recovery from injury can take a lot of games to get back to match fitness and speed

this season he has played 5 prem games and 2 CL ones. I’d suggest that he needs at least 10 games or more to get anywhere near to fitness levels for a top player. And he may not get there again considering the problems he had

Has he been that bad then? I’ve seen us win games he has played in and not seen the opposition go through the middle to beat us. I’ve seen them go wide and attack our FBs because that’s a clear area to target for most coaches.

Has anyone beaten us playing through midfield? Last night certainly that was the case but it’s not gonna be every game we play a team of Bayern’s quality in midfield

None of the others were required to play the ball from where he did under the pressure he was - that's the role.

If only Dier actually was a 'top player'

Ah, is that why players like Carrick / Fernandinho / Rodri / Busquets / Fabinho etc famously have such low pass completion %s compared to their teammates?!

With all due respect I think any intelligence or commitment to evidence and rational thought that you claim to have is consistently undone by your fervent commitment to your pre-existing opinions.

Not at their best, no. I assumed your comparison was against the rest of our team.

Our entire team was brick last night. Our entire team got overrun. Dier's pass completion stats are what I'd expect from a play in his position in a match like that when everyone is being brick. They're not the stats I'd expect from a player in his position when his team is tinkling all over the opposition like those player's teams usually do.

You are just being silly. Go chat with @scaramanga, be happy
You started the discussion with me, don't be scared. I haven't called you names. I'm just asking your opinion as you questioned mine.

Did you think Sissoko played well yesterday? If not what's the issue with what I said?

That'll be your short memory.

Your love for Dier whilst ridiculing Jordan Henderson is mind boggling. They're both very limited footballers. Dier is actually more limited. He's not a midfielder and keeps showing it. He may make it as a centre back but the more time goes on, the less likely it looks that he's at the level we need. Which is a shame because he seems like a smashing lad with a great attitude.

Yet he played really well in that precise role when he was fit.

Henderson has never even approached mediocre.
