Which £40m game changer is available this window, if we did have the money?

Griezmann - has had his fingers burnt and wants to go home
Dembele - is he better than Moura, questionable attitude

Any others?

Why £40m? I would push Fiorentina for a Vlahovic deal. It’s clear that we need another striker. I would also look for a strong centre back. Who? I don’t know, I’m sure if I spent a bit of time looking around I could identify someone. I mean we do have a scouting set up that hopefully hasn’t been sat on their hands all season so far.
I would prioritise those two signings over Traore. I would look for a creative progressive passing midfielder too. Coutinho was a choice, but with him gone I think we will need to get looking again.

Is it that much? Hard to think Villa are shelling that out. Would imagine Barca must be helping out.

I think that they must be. Those wages are excessive otherwise and would negate his value. Perhaps Villa are paying a loan fee, with Barca continuing to pay the wages.

Do you even have the money that vlahovic would cost?

£40m is just about our top of range signing (Ndombele, Sanchez) is all.

I don't think either Fiorentina or Vlahovic want to move this window. Maybe it'll be £40m in the summer, but it'll be a £70m premium if it is now. That extra would then have to come off our summer budget.

My point is more that good players don't tend to move in January.

Alvarez (it's currently Argentina's close season) or Dybala (out of contract in 5 months) are probably more realistic - either would be fantastic actually too. Might leave us £20m over for an up-and-coming CB as well

they'd want more mid season too, harder to replace him

Yes and no. Impossible to replace him really. The next highest goal scorer in the team has 2 goals. But he loses value in the summer. Europa league is worth what €20m?

It's a lot to think about. This is one weird window. With many clubs in financial difficulty. Covid still a thing meaning squads may be decimated.

Player exchanges/loans may be a way.

It’s a fair argument and a fair point. As a fan, I completely agree. I don’t want another Nelson and Saha window. But we could also spunk 100m on a couple of players and still miss out. Every option is fraught with risk. I think Levy is fiscally very conservative, too conservative even for my liking. But, to be fair to him, his approach does have its merits.
Merits and a lack of trophies and success. Sometimes you have to take the risk if success is genuinely your intention. If not then fair enough.

Hate to say it but that taco of sol campbels agent made a good point on sky sports.

There's over 100 (top) players out of contract in the summer. 40 of them played in the cl this summer. He estimated (probably added on transfermarkt) that's £1.5bn in transfer fees clubs won't get this summer. On top of the loses from covid. Players outside the mbappe or haaland won't be getting wages they might have expected. Even out of contract. Clubs just don't have the money.

The bubble finally bursting might do a lot of good for the structures of the game

It won't burst. This is just a freeze. Clubs will go bust. Then you will get idiots buying some of them on the cheap thinking they can do better. They will throw money at it, until they run out. Then dump the club. Some clubs will survive, some won't.

The fans of the clubs that go bust, will give up or follow a new team.

The ones that drop will try and convince their kids to support their team. But the kids will wan't glory. Why support sunderland and get the tinkle taken out of you in school, when you can support city, that win stuff? And take the tinkle out of the other kids?

The big clubs get bigger, small get smaller. Till there is only 1 or 2, able to compete.

Champions league was the death of thd game. Too much a gap in money, especially smaller leagues. Then they die.

Not a burst. Just death of a thousand cuts.

They don't have to be £40m....

Jesus Corona went from Porto to Seville for a very small fee as he was out of contract in the summer and had told Porto he wasn't signing a new one. Given that he is a top class attacking RWB he could've made a big impact in our current team and formation. A player like Nahitan Nandez at Cagliari would also improve us in the RWB position and could be got for well under £20m IMO.

There are also a huge number of players out of contract this summer who's clubs would likely sell if netting a good fee, just as Conte's Inter Milan took advantage of when buying Eriksen from us). I suspect that the difference is our chairman wouldn't be prepared to pay 17m for a player to be brought in now who could be secured for no transfer fee in the summer. In paying that money for Eriksen, Inter Milan prioritised winning. That isn't something that I see our owners doing.

Here is a list of players out of contract in the summer (or already out of contract) who might improve positions in our squad....

Dybala (forward)
Kessie (CM)
Brozovic (CM)
Sule (CB)
Dembele (WF)
Alvarez (WF/CF)
Belotti (CF)
Azmoun (CF)
Kamara (DM)
Ginter (CB)
Lingard (AM/WF)
Romagnoli (CB)
Denayer (CB)
Mazraoui (RB)
Kramaric (forward)
Felipe (CB)
Grillitsch (CM)
Tolisso (CM)
Bernardeschi (WF)
Mbemba (CB)
Zagadou (CB)
Origi (CF)
Muani (CF)
Gigot (CB)
Modric (CM)
Eriksen (CM)
Perisic (LWB/WF)
Pavon (WF)
Brereton Diaz (CF)
Isco (CM/AM)
Xeka (CM)
Johnstone (GK)

Almost any of those could be secured if our club offer the commensurate wage to the player as though they are on a bosman and then agree a fee with the club (I doubt any of this list would be anything like £40m right now, even the players at clubs challenging for their league title).

Seems Villa are paying them all but he’s believed to have agreed to a 35% pay cut.

In which case it will cost Villa only about £5m to have him for the rest of this season.... If Coutinho is responsible for them achieving just one single place higher in the table then he's just about paid for himself.... and that's before you consider the fact that by signing him Villa have probably ensured that they will have a few more of their matches selected for TV. Seems an absolute bargain when looking at the signing like that really.

I wouldn’t use Inter as an example, look at the financial mess they are in now, that led to them losing Conte.

Short term success is never worth long term damage.

Inter's financial mess is caused by their Chinese owners not being able to get money out of China (or perhaps not having the money in the first place).

Also considering Inter Milan are currently top of Serie A by 2 points with a game in hand and VERY likely to at least achieve another season of CL football next season, I'm not sure what 'long term damage' will result for them? Inter Milan won Serie A last season and may well win it again this season.... they MIGHT end up going through a couple of seasons where they are outside of the CL or even Europa. So the only difference between them and us really is that their owners prioritised them to win things while they could.

They were almost bankrupt. They had to sell to pay off a debt of €250m. If they didn't the banks would have seized them. Now they may well have found a new buyer but if not they would have been asset stripped and may have gone the way of rangers.
Other clubs in serie a are in a similar mess. Juventus had to write to their shareholders to tell them that due to the criminal investigation. They might not be able to refinance their loans. As a result they might go bankrupt. Milan similar as are roma.
