Encounters and Real Life Experiences with Spurs (and other players)

Pat Jennings on the last flight home to Belfast after the Southampton 3-2 win (Gylfi last kick!). Got on, Big Pat sitting there, couldn't believe my eyes, shook his hand. During the flight he posed for selfies and signed autographs for a couple of dozen drunken NI Spurs. He couldn't have been more accomodating. Man's a legend!

As best man, organised a stag weekend in Saudi Sportswashing Machine.

Get to the hotel, who is walking out but Obifemi Martins! Black Ferrari outside and a really polite guy to chat to the whole stag do! Was having dinner at the hotel when we got back as well and acknowledged us without prompt!

Drinking in a bar in jesmond that day, who walks in but Shearer and Steve Stone. I spent an hour speaking with Stone about various topics and he was such a funny fella! Shearer was ok, kept himself to himself, as he explained if he did one picture, he would have to do the whole bar and he was out with his mates and didn't want to spoil there day! I respected that!

Depends on the situation surely?!?!?

At or around a football event they should do everything they can

On their own time they should be polite but do what suits then and their circumstances

I remember a long while ago I was in the living Room in Mnachetser when it was the place to go. A bouncer came over and said that we had to move as. United were coming in. I thought ok and went to the loo. My mate (I was his customer) who is a bold as brass Manc salesmen called a few lads he knows and low and behold when I got back I had a signature from David Beckham saying sorry for any inconvenience... I gave it go the landlord of his out but even then they realised that the expectation around them was a pain for them but also for others

Most players I've met have been sound and polite. Some clearly don't want to go out of their way but none have been rude other that a certain Edward Sheringham and bizarrely Terry Venables (but that was in the loo, on his tow phones the day he was supposed to be the new Eire manager and he was in Langhams with Piers Morgan)

Absolutely fair comment and agreed...funny you mention Beckham, one of the nicest of all, never ever shirks being a decent bloke and steps up whenever he can...top man.

Met Paul Walsh when he left Pompey and retired around 96/97. A friend of the family at the time (Terry something) was head of the Pompey supporters trust and was also a builder. Paul had a pub/hotel in Berkshire I think it was and we went up there for a couple of weeks refurbishing it. I remember lots of chat about horses, which I think he owned at the time, and also lots of drunken nights. A few of his Portsmouth footballing mates came by for drinks and they all seemed down to earth fellas but as I was only 16/17 at the time it was all a bit surreal.

Met Jamie O'Hara on a plane back from Portugal the other day, he was with the Fulham squad. Life complete...

Can you imagine Lennon, Lampard or any other modern footballer running a pub after they retire...how times have changed.

like i said they should be happy to pose for photos with kids and, to add, of course when involved with team activities the same applies - but they're people too and when on their own time i don't see why they should be expected to be happy about being pestered for photos from grown adults who, in my opinion, should know enough to respect their space and leave them alone.

just my two cents..

50k a week says they should take 5 seconds of their time to sign an autograph or have a photo.

Not all of us get the chance to meet famous people / footballers all the time.

Did a kids football training session with Peter Osgood at a campsite, years back.

I didn't really know who he was, but very friendly... I have an old photo somewhere, might try and dig it out.

I've met and been in the presence of hundreds since around 2004 since getting in with first with Roy Reyland and obviously now the new kit manager, Ryan Mason etc...

Teddy is my favourite Spur and I'm shocked to hear this although he did slap my exs arse in a nightclub she told me! I'll let him have that one though.

Nastiest I'd say was Alan Hutton and Jacques Maghoma. Had a few beers with them via Bentley in Crews Hill Golf Club. Dunno what I can or can't say so I'll leave it there in public anyway!

Livermore, Gardner, Jenas were great and real gents actually.

Stephen Carr is the biggest taco I've seen. Two kids about 7 in Bill Nicholson way after a game around 2003. He sped out and nearly knocked them over trying to get his autograph.

Iversen ran into Rudolphs after a match and we followed him and he bought me and a pal a beer - we bought him one back!

Gus Poyet was a star with the ladies signing a few autographs and was very nice.

Gary Doherty was a legend when I saw him in the players lounge around 2000 wasn't drinking but was the joker of the squad that evening.

Non Spurs

Ian Wright sorry to say is the funniest night I've been out on in tiger tiger with Roy Reyland and a few family friends. We bumped into him and despite his love for them lot he cuddled me more in 1.5 hours than I've cuddled my missus in 6 years!

Ray Parlour. Bumped into him in Paradise Wildlife Park, Broxbourne. He was coming out of a lowered door as I was about to go in. I stepped back to allow him out not knowing who he was. As he came out and stood up he clocked my THFC jumper and saw I recognised him and said 'You're not gonna hit me are you? I smiled and shook his hand and told him I hated him as a kid as he always seemed to do well against us. An hour or so later my missus and kid went on a train ride but I was happy to sit down and wait so I sat down. Him and his missus came running over and they had a similar idea so he sat down next to me. We spent about 20 minutes just talking. Very nice guy.

Pat Rice taco. Stewart Houston taco. John Fashanu taco. Dion Dublin taco. Jens Lehmann taco surprise surprise. Bobby Gould legend. Jason Cundy very funny but taco. Ruddock legend.

They're the ones that stand out. I've been very lucky to meet a lot over the years through contacts.

my folks used to live in totteridge, they sold their house to none other than Herr Freund back in his playing days for us. he immediately dug up the front yard, made a mess out of the house and rented it out to jens lehman. hmmm. I saw Freundy when I flew to LA a couple of years ago to see us play the Galaxy, once I re-introduced myself to him, the first thing he asked was how my parents were doing, that was a nice gesture. Wenger lived round the corner, his back yard almost backed on to ours. Ginola lived down the road and was in Textbond newsagents on whetstone high street a lot ordering obscure french magazines, this was pre-internet era.

Martin Chivers came to our school once. Was it to do with the sports hall opening? I can't remember, but I recall him as big, friendly and avuncular and that he signed a lot of autographs. 20 years later, in my science teaching days, a youthful Sol Campbell appeared with one of the deputy heads one day, while I was doing cover in PE. Must have been one of the club's local schools initiatives. He was very quiet; gave the impression it was a bit of a chore for him being there, although it might just have been shyness. I bumped into Frank McLintock once on his way to Old Street tube; didn't bother speaking to him, though. That's the sum total of my personal contact with professional footballers, I'm quite happy to say. A friend of mine was at school with Sheringham. Says he was a flash git.

I once drove George Best & his wife Alex back to his hotel after he attended a function , she was lovely & Geoerge was a bit tipsy ;) .
I noticed in an earlier post that someone mentioned that Alan Shearer didn't want to get picture taken when out with friends , fair enough. Watched Spurs beat Saudi Sportswashing Machine 2-0 at St James park must be maybe 15 years ago, I think Poyet scored .i enjoyed getting football shirts signed and after the match myself & a friend waited around to get some of the Saudi Sportswashing Machine players to sign . Every player who came out was brilliant , no problem signing . About an hr had passed an we noticed Shearer behind the large gates about to get into his car, there was maybe 5 small kids waiting to get his autograph .We both agreed we would hold back until he signed them an then we would go over . The gates opened an he drove straight past ,drove to a junction about 20 meters away an was behind a few cars. We quickly moved to his car , he had his window down, we showed him the Saudi Sportswashing Machine Jersey an asked him very politely would he sign, he looked up at us and then turned to his radio on an drove off. Couldn't believe it,this was the England captain, probably on 80k a week and couldn't sign a few autographs , not for us ( that was beside the point) but for the Saudi Sportswashing Machine kids standing at the gates who had just watched their team get beat 2-0, he could have cheered them up. I fully respect players when they are out , that's their private time but show your fans respect when you are at work. I called Saudi Sportswashing Machine Fc , told them as their captain he should be representing the club better.
On a side note go to YouTube and type in Ed Sheeran meets fans , total respect for the guy

I've met quite a few football players whilst I worked at a soul/jazz/dance music specialist record shop in Walthamstow many years ago.

My first footballer customer had just become an ex-Spur, when signing for Coventry City, one Terry Gibson. He now commentates on the La Liga games for Sky Sports . He loved his vinyl soul U.S. imports and because of the move to the midlands, became a mail order customer.

Long term regulars were Clive Wilson , Danny Maddix - both top blokes, proper gents. Wilson loved his vinyl and boy did he love to haggle for his discount!

Also had Teddy, Sir Les and Sicknote pop in a few times.

Served Beckham and Andy Cole. Beckham's sister would do his shopping for him most times, but he did pop in himself once or twice, wearing a flat cap pulled down over his face. Andy Cole was a bit moody , serious type, and would have minders with him. Both, were into their CD's.

At WHL , I also had a few words with Stefan Iversen in the West Stand, when I'd come out of the toilets to see him chatting up my then missus. She loved it too and told me she wanted to 'Cougar' him! I did really well getting away from that slapper:D

Terry Gibson trains at Chigwell David Lloyd. Used to see him a lot, I've since moved out the area but friends say he still goes

Most players are ok if your reasonable with them

It mainly depends on the circumstances

A favourite of mine was being a bit drunk at Wembley when we played United in the league cup final. Firstly I knocked James Nesbitt over (accidentally but he was really aloof) and then in the toilets I'm chatting to Solskaer... Nice bloke until I call him baby face... Probably not a great thi g to say to a man with his knob in his hand
