Can anyone shed any light on why Kindle books are more expensive than books made from trees.

I always thought the premise of going digital was to make things cheaper.

The Misses wants the Miranda Hart book and its priced on Amazon

Kindle £10.99

Hard £9.00

Paper £7.19

I can only assume they are recouping for the underselling price of the e-books themselves, akin to selling Inkjets and recouping with the amazing amount ink costs.

Was the initial selling points of e-books to suggest that reading material would be a lot cheaper or was that me.

kindle books are normally cheaper in my experience, bit of an aberration there, maybe the hardback is just on special, they might have over printed

They will charge what they can get away with. Introduce them cheaply to encourage use. Then if enough people prefer the convenience of the e-book and the instant delivery they will begin to charge more for the premium service. Clearly they can make the same profit at a much lower price, but it won't stop them trying to charge more. If it ends up cheaper it won't be for any interest in preserving trees.

Its a bit like ATM fees. ATM was brought in to reduce costs of bank clerks and was free to encourage use. As people got used to the convenience the banks started adding fees, although in the UK they were largely resisted and/or regulated.

It's all about perception...if kindle books were very cheap it would destroy the real book market. By making them approximately the same price they are telling us that books cost x no matter the costs to them...as the above poster alluded to, they were never going to pass on the cost saving to the end user, they are just increasing their profits!

thats the truth though isn't it, when you buy a book you are paying for the writers art, not the bits over the air or the paper and print

How much of the cost of a paperback or hardback book is from production and logistics?

My guess would be that it's a fairly small fraction of the cost of the book, and there are costs involved with e-books as well (even though probably much smaller).

How do you get it on the Kindle? What sort of file would it be.

I don't use a kindle.

I think it's .mobi I download in several formats because I use a Nexus7 which can read differing formats.

Calibre can convert between formats if you need to convert a downloaded book to be read on Kindle.

if you have an Android phone/tablet there's a free Kindle app for reading on that.

She has a Kindle as well as a New Ipad, but prefers the kindle to read.

Does the Kindle not send messages back to HQ that the item on the ebook is hooky.

For me, I download everything.. but for her she likes everything legit. Not clued up on the kindle, and simply never used it.

Does it connect to the laptop, how does it get onto the kindle.. Ipad I use ITunes software. What does Kindle use.
