Djed Spence

Spence is a really good player, very athletic and reads the game well

Ange or his assistant coaches really needs to admit fault for not allowing Spence to come into the matches earlier.

Every time Spence plays, he is always better than Johnson and Werner in terms of game contribution, which is no small feat. To me he is as good as Udogie and is a good complementary sub (one better in defence, the other in attack). When fit Ange should be actively rotating them in matches early, around the 60 min mark, to keep up with the demands of angeball and to reduce risks of overuse injury

Better than Udogie. At the very least we should have equal rotation between Porro, Spence and Udogie, but I would play Porro and Spence against the big sides.

Why? They see him every day mate. Going on the little Ange has said, it might have been an attitude issue. So, let’s say for example he wasn’t quite applying himself during training. Most coaches would say if you don’t train well, you don’t play.

That’s just one read of the situation using some logic. There are many other possible explanations. The least likely is “Ange and his coaches couldn’t spot the talent.”

Udogie has a few more areas to develop. I am really hoping there isn't something affecting his hunger to be the best because if he doesn't bring it, he will fall by the wayside. He wouldn't be the first neither would he be the last. He has an opportunity but it looks like Djed is getting to the position to push for the starting LB spot. That can only be good for the team w.r.t. competition for spaces.

This. Currently looks like we have 3 full backs that all can be really good and one of them can play either side. Still probably need another option at some point unless Gray is seen as a full back long term (I doubt it). But having more than two is really useful.

Super impressive from Spence.

in the end, ange must get points on the game, attitude or not. you see this happening in top clubs, its a think line but one guy's attitude cannot be the reason for losing points.

if he can't manage spence's ego or attitude how do you think he is going to fare with more expensive players with bigger ego?

I think the point is that we don't know what the reason was for him not being used more sooner.

However Ange is managing Spence he's getting great performances out of him now so I doubt there are big issues.

Worth mentioning that while he is 24 now and not exactly a kid he's still fairly young. And at this level and against PL opposition fairly inexperienced. Also essentially new to this system and role this season. And he's had injury problems.

For a player like that to be integrated a bit slowly, taking around half a season to be integrated really isn't a big deal. Compared to what Ange did with VdV, Kinsky and some others it's a bit "slow". But nothing unusual.

Definitely his best game for us last night especially as he was probably playing on his least favoured side and considering who his direct opponent was.

Taking all attributes into account I think there's a fair chance he's our most rounded full back.

Excellent tonight.
Did his job extremely well - I barely noticed Salah.
Salah barely figured in the match. Absolute boss performance by Spence.

So much of becoming a regular PL player is about taking your chances when the opportunity arises. Spence has, in my opinion, earned a permanent spot in the team with his recent performances.

I actually think this permanent spot mentality is what gets us into trouble. I like the term "regular" though as in a match we can use up to 16 players across close to 100 mins, and in a good season we will have close to 60 games. There's plenty of space for upwards of 20 players to be regulars, especially at Ange-ball intensity.

As one swallow doesn't make a summer, let's see Spence make it incredibly difficult for Udogie to get back in when he returns in a month's time. There is so much football between now and then for Spence to get that opportunity.
