Dissertation - Your Help Needed!

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Through my Dad mainly and the fact I live pretty close to Tottenham in a neighbouring borough

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

Most of the time I do go on my own as no one else has the money with personal commitments taking priority. Cost for a ticket on average is probably £45 and I only spend a little more the day itself as I drive to the ground only buy a programme so we can say a £10 extra

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Definitely and for the worse it has to be said. Even away games now are pretty quiet.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

I do go to away games and the price is as bad for them as they are the home prices. £62 for an Arsenal ticket, £55 for Chelsea and QPR.......way in excess of what the average supporter should be paying. The cheapest ticket for those fixtures at home is £45 which imo is still a little too pricey for a lowest price ticket.

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

I chose us when I was a wee lad because I loved the colors, loved the crest, loved the sound of the old wooden WHL and loved seeing Gilzean and Conn; as a youngster, Alfie Conn was just fantastic...all that hair and maverickdom!

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

No, but I would. 4--45 quid. The cost? Hmmm...it's a lot. Put it this way, transportation from my front door is a flight! Don't bother with program anymore, beers when at home are at the Bell, so about 20 quid, food probably the same.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Absolutely. In the last 10 years things have got weirder and weirder; the clamp downs are absurd. Away games are much more fun depending on where you are. This season at Arsenal was one of the most sterile NLDs I've ever been to, cameras in the face, pathetic.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

I go to whatever games I can. I live abroad now (ex-pat) and get back on average three times a year, meaning I get to (on average) 6 matches a seasons, some seasons 10, others three. Averages to 6. I always manage at least half of those as away games, and the more of a day-trip it is, the better. Price? I'm prepare to pay up to 70 quid right now, but in all seriousness, I cannot be choosy; I'm always happy I can get a ticket whenever I'm over.

1) Born in Tottenham and lived in the area 80% of my life.

2) Yes. Season ticket worked out at £34.87 per game this term. I walk to the ground and never bother with a program or refreshments. If it's very cold I might take a flask of beef tea with me; otherwise my only expense is the match ticket, £34.87.

3) Seems worse to me since we made an appearance in the CL and started to feel entitled. It has always gone through up and down phases, though.

4) Sometimes. Used to go away more often, when it was simple to book a place on a club coach along with your ticket application. Stopped doing that when they decided to farm the club travel bookings out to Thompson or whoever it was, because I resented paying another fee just for the privelege of having to book separately. If I go away outside London, I'll usually drive nowadays. More likely to go to London derbies away, and particularly enjoy the trip to Craven Cottage. Wouldn't usually pay more than about £40-50.

Thanks again for all your answers fellas. Going to try and keep this thread bumped until Sunday so I can get as many results as possible

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Early 1970's. Six years old. No local team. No family interest in football. Didn't even know there was such a thing as professional football, with teams to support, until an older kid told me that I had to support a team. After that, I got a pack of six football stickers. Six players I didn't know, who played for six teams I didn't know. One of them was called Martin Chivers, who played for a team called Tottenham Hotspur. All still meaningless to me, apart from one thing: my favourite food at that age was jelly (jello, if you're from the US). And the jelly that my Mum always used to buy was called Chivers Jelly. That was me. Spurs for life. Reckon you won't find too many with a similar tale to tell!

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

Attend games with three other mates. Have a season ticket but averages out at about £45 per game. Overall cost of the day about £55.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Undoubtedly quieter everywhere.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

Still go to away games but not as many as I used to. There's no specific issue re away ticket prices, IMO. Clubs have to charge away fans the same price that they charge home fans for similar seats. There is an issue re generally high ticket prices - but it's hard to argue against clubs whose stadiums are full. Supply and demand. As to what I'd be prepared to pay, it depends entirely on the game. Spurs in the Champions League final?.........I'd mortgage my house (that might be a lie).

Hi hope this is helpful

1 My dad took me back in the late 50's

2 I go with my son and grandson, got a season ticket so it works out to about £35 a game, £25 drink, food, shared travel cost and parking.

3 Yes, I find it very negative. It seems most people expect us to win every game and are just going for reflected glory, there does not seem to be any respect for the away team or the game in general.

4 Tend to go to games where its easy to park near stadium and an non-aggresive feel. The cost does not bother me as long as I enjoy myself.

Good Luck

KDDDD??

Took me a few moments (especially now that it's no longer there on that wall!)..................Ken Dodd's Dad's Dog's Dead?

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Had no interest whatsoever in football until Mum made me go on a local football training course at the age of 10. Got me into the sport, and supporting Tottenham was the obvious choice.

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?#

Yes most of the time. Average home ticket around £40. Lucky enough to live relatively near, so the whole day probably only costs £60ish, depending on how much time is spent in the pub.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Yes. When I think back to my first game in 2001, when we were crap but the atmosphere was cracking, it is a sad comparison. People just generally don't seem as up for singing anymore, and expect too much of the team.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

Yes. They seem to vary quite a lot. Have recently paid only £20 at Bolton, £28 at Leeds and £30 at Everton, which I think is fairly reasonable, but paid £50 at Man U. Wanted to go to West Brom last weekend but £40 put me off, which is a shame.

Serious question and not a wind-up, honest: Are anecdotal contributions from anonymous posters on an Internet forum generally accepted as legitimate sources in research for a university dissertation? I ask as someone who graduated from university 20+ years ago and who is honestly curious about the role of technology in research these days.

Yeah there are lots written on techniques to gain data. Many will do face to face interviews, but the number of people who use the internet and places like forum's is growing, as it means you can get data from people further afield who you might not be able to ask otherwise. Some people even do interviews over skype for example. People sometimes decide just to do a questionnaire but I thought for this study, I want people to write more so i can determine patterns in themes spoke about and use quotes from answers in my results. I'd say most people i know are using the internet as a way to get their data

Hi Guys, Im in my 3rd year of University and currently writing my dissertation focusing on commercialisation of football and in particular the rise in ticket prices. As a season ticket holder myself, the focus is going to be on our club and the views of our fans. I have 4 main questions below in which to answer for my study, and would appreciate if as many of you could spare a 10 minutes to answer them for me (there is no limit on how many words you answer it with, the more the better in fact)

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

My first football coach as a kid brought me a Tottenham scarf - he was a Spurs fan himself and since then I was in!

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

Yes - Ticket £50 - With Travel - £95

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Bit quieter now, a bit more family friendly.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

Sometimes, mainly if they are in London or near relatives. Same as a home game, because I simply don't mind having to pay the equivalent at an away stadium. Maybe a bit less if it was a really far game considering the extra travel that would be incurred.

Thanks in advance for those who can answer - Calum

Replies underneath Qs.

Thanks again for all the replies that have been given so far. Going to use tomorrow and Saturday as last two days of collecting my results!

Thanks for everyone who answered the questions for me giving me data to use for my dissertation. I have pm'd each of you individually as I had a couple more questions needing answering for demographics of the people who answered. If you could respond to that asap I would be grateful!

As i previously said, if any of you are interested in seeing the final piece, I will be more than happy to share, and again, thanks!

1) A combination of different factors, one being that my fellow countryman Erik Thorstvedt was playing for Spurs when I was 13-14 and really started to get into English football. It also had to do with Lineker's goals and Gazza's skill, and the fact that all my friends supported ManU - and that I always had a tendency to choose differently...

2) No, not alone. On average, travelling from Norway and normally spending a night or two at a hotel, I easily spend £200-300 on a match day. Tickets I've paid from £28-72 for. On average around £40 per ticket, I guess.

3) Yes. I believe there was more singing 6-7 years ago, if the games that I've attended are something to go by. But since I only go once, maybe twice a season maximum, it's a little hard for me to compare the general atmosphere from season to season.

4) I don't go to away games. If I did, I would be prepared to pay the same for away tickets as home tickets; between £40-50. But if I went to every away game, this would be a bit exensive.

Edit: I am the stupidest person on earth, it seems. Lesson learned: Remember to read the last post in a thread before you reply to the first one...#-o
