Dissertation - Your Help Needed!

Cal_Yido

Matthew Etherington
Hi Guys, Im in my 3rd year of University and currently writing my dissertation focusing on commercialisation of football and in particular the rise in ticket prices. As a season ticket holder myself, the focus is going to be on our club and the views of our fans. I have 4 main questions below in which to answer for my study, and would appreciate if as many of you could spare a 10 minutes to answer them for me (there is no limit on how many words you answer it with, the more the better in fact)

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

Thanks in advance for those who can answer - Calum

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Feb 1968. A mate of my dad converted my & my bother to the one true faith with tales of 1967 FA Cup wins. Although probably thought it would also be a laugh as my old fella was a Goon.

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

Yes - well a travel alone & meet mates there
Averages at a Cat B (£40 to £45?)
Used to be £80ish now i am a miser & keep it to £60-65.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Most definitely. The more successful a team is the worse the home atmosphere becomes. Definitely deteriotated at the Lane in the last 2-3 seasons in particular.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

I only do the odd London away & very occasional European away these days. Ticket prices in general are extortionate & TV scheduling has made going to aways like a military operation.

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?
My brothers made me support THFC, so a bit of brotherly pressure.

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?
No, I go with 2 of my brothers and a few friends. I am a season ticket holder so average ticket costs £40. Probably about £30 a day with food and drink etc.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?
Yes, it is a lot quieter, less singing.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?
I have only been to a handful of away games. Id be prepared to pay £50 which is a little more than what I pay because there is a less chance of getting a ticket I guess.

Thanks for the answers already. I'm aiming for about 15-20 replies by Sunday, so every answer helps!

1 - I was a big fan of Gazza and my uncle took me to my first game in 91' when I was 6

2 - No I go with a mate and his family I have a season ticket which is £840 and I few beers and a programme means I spend about £20 in a match day

3 - Yes it has deteriorated massively

4 - I got to 2/3 a season and some e.g. Fulham are nearly £60 which is too much but I still go

1) chose them when I was about nine, most interesting local team at the time.

2) yes, ticket £40 or so. Train now £30, food/drink £20 over the day, so pretty much £100 inc ticket

3) No. I suppose I disagree with the majority on here who feel there is a decline in atmosphere! Although comparing the 2000s to the 1990s football has seemed more open to everyone rather than the white working class male aged 20-60 and I think that's a good thing. Atmosphere definitely dependent on time of fixture and opposition though.

4) no I don't go to away games though would like to. Commitments mean that I currently can only get to matches within the South East region, would love to be able to go to Reading or Southampton away but can never get a ticket. For that reason I would probably be willing to pay over the odds but without screwing up your data with a shocking average, lets say £50.

I must admit though from a selfish THFC point of view I don't think the capping of ticket prices is necessarily a good one. We always take a lot of away fans. And we always sell out at home. Take a team like Wigan, they bring maybe 1000 fans, if tickets were £20 each then yes 3000 more Wigan fans make a better atmosphere but that is approximately £20x3000 = £60k less the club would have made by selling tickets to home fans. Plus it's hard to get tickets for home matches at WHL as it is, so while I can accept not getting a ticket for Arsenal at home, at least I know I can get a ticket for Fulham or Wigan. If more away fans come then there's less home tickets to go round all season then all of a sudden games like Everton and Sunderland start becoming a real lottery too.

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Age 6, saw my first game on TV, Hoddle was playing, that was enough. The pain I have endured since has all been worth it (I think).

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?
Usually with one or two friends. Average ticket £45. Food, drink, travel (usually train) £40-80.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?
Since our elevation from mid-table has beens, to consistent top 4 challengers I have noticed a change in atmosphere at the smaller games, i think that expectation levels have changed and this has had an adverse effect on the noise level. Lack of standing and price have also effected the atmosphere, although i believe this has effected all clubs, not just Spurs.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?
Usually attend 2-3 away games a year, Fulham is my favourite, but is expensive. Unfortunately as we become more successful our away days become more expensive, QPR away is the worst value for money. Try to attend away grounds I haven't been too, Fulham aside, I don't normally attend the same away ground two seasons running.

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

a) All of the family, on my father's side supported Spurs, taken to my first game in 1969, hooked from then onwards.

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

a) approx £43 per ticket.
b) I attend WHL with 4 or 5 others (although I have gone on my own); I only buy one programme a season (on the last home game) and spend about £10 on food and drink.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

a) at WHL definitely. Away from home, a great deal depends on how the team is playing.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

a) I try to get to all of our UK based games, although I am starting to baulk at paying £55/62 per ticket.

Thanks in advance for those who can answer - Calum - you are most welcome and best of luck with your dissertation.

1) My Dad

2) With Dad. Depends on the category but on average about £55. £3.50 programme, £10 food/drink, £40 in petrol. So over £100 in total.

3) Yes, for the worse

4) Don't go to away games mainly because it's so difficult to get tickets but would be prepared to go to a few.

Amazing how many of these 'dissertations' are on the internet. My cynical mind points me to this being a very very cheap marketing/survey ploy.

Hi hope this is helpful

1 My dad took me back in the late 50's

2 I go with my son and grandson, got a season ticket so it works out to about £35 a game, £25 drink, food, shared travel cost and parking.

3 Yes, I find it very negative. It seems most people expect us to win every game and are just going for reflected glory, there does not seem to be any respect for the away team or the game in general.

4 Tend to go to games where its easy to park near stadium and an non-aggresive feel. The cost does not bother me as long as I enjoy myself.

Good Luck

I can honestly say Wriggly this is for a dissertation! Once i have it written I am more than happy to send it to people who may be interested seeing as the main focus of my results is to do with Spurs fans and the answers I am getting in this thread!

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

My Dad. And his Dad etc

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

Haven't attended a game alone no. Go with mates generally. Not been to a league game at White Hart Lane, only fairly low profile cup games so round 20/25 quid normally. As for money spent, depends really, travel is expensive for me as I've got to come down from Liverpool and that combined with drinking/food can be easily over £100.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?
I've probably only been going to games for 5 years now, and the trips are fairly infrequent so I can't say I have.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?
I mainly go to away games as they're a lot easier for me to get to ie any northwest club. I tend to draw the line at over 35 quid, it's hard to justify the price as a student when to enjoy the day properly you have to travel and I'll probably want to drink/eat/put a bet on, can add up very quickly.

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

Dad has followed Spurs since the 60s and i didn't have much choice in the matter growing up

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?#

No - always used to go with my Dad but nowadays there's a little group of us around my age that travel up together plus all the people we know from going over there for so long

£840 for a ST / 21 games

excluding the pub probably a tenner if i get myself something to eat - including the pub?

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

Yes - with success (relative success) comes expectation and with expectation comes nerves - games are either really tense where the fans are too worried about the outcome to get behind the team or we are comfortably winning and no one is too fussed

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

away tickets are reasonable in that they are comparable to what the home fans pay for similar seats - tickets on a whole are too expensive though

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?

I was a keeper in my youth, and Erik Thorstvedt was my hero, he played for spurs, and thats where it began.

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?

I have only been to 5 games, and never alone. I live in Norway so it's not too often I get time to go. Usually costs around £600 for the trip including tickets and hotel.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?

I so rarely go that I haven't

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?

No.

Thanks in advance for those who can answer - Calum

There, I was probably not in your target group, but I answered anyway! :)

Don't know if it helps as I don't live in England but I'll answer anyway in case you want some answers from non-uk fans

1) How did you become a fan of Tottenham Hotspur FC?
My dad took me to London when I was 13, we wanted to go see a game and Tottenham-Everton had tickets on general sale. Luckily we won 3-0 and I've been a yid since.

2) Do you attend games alone? How much on average does a home ticket at White Hart Lane cost you? How much does an average home game day (including programme, food, drink, travel) cost you?
Because I'm not a member/season ticket holder I sometimes have to buy really overpriced tickets. I payed 150 pounds to see the NLD once, but sometimes I manage to get tickets off general sale (bought tickets for the Lyon game for 44 pounds each) I have attended matches with my dad, my brother, my cousin and soon with a friend who lives in London.

3) Have you noticed a change in atmosphere at football grounds in more recent times?
Can't say that I have but I haven't been to enough games to say.

4) Do you go to away games and believe the price of tickets for away fans is reasonable? How much would you be prepared to pay and why?
Haven't been to an away game.

Thanks for the replies from you who don't actually live in the UK - it allows me more room to add a bit to talk about fans from outside of the UK and how much you guys have to pay to get to a game
