Danny Rose

He was far better than anyone gave him credit for. Had a poor spell when he returned from injury. prior to that and in the last 6 games he looked very good.

He is one of those players who fans pick on for anything and even this year I saw people bring up his sending off at villa 4 years ago when criticising him. He was very good earlier this season (had some bad games too) but it has taken him to be the best left back in the Prem in 2015 for people to give him credit. Our fans took a lot of convincing (wrongly) on Danny.

They gave Rose a 5 year deal prior to singing Davies so I think it was more to do with competition than him being a replacement.

Exactly and don't forget last season he was playing behind a player new to this league who offered very little cover, combined with no cover at all from central midfield

It's makes a huge difference for him being fitter under Poch to suit the system but also knowing that he does have some cover from Bentelab or Mason

If you saw something in Rose last season that suggested he could be the player he is now, you should be a scout.

There were moments last season where he (and Naughton) were just plain fudgeing terrible ...

Full credit that he has stepped up, but lets be clear, I think even the club thought Davies would be a significant upgrade.

Ahem.......

December 2012:

I disagree massively. I think he looks tailor made to be a good left back.... Quick enough, strong enough and good enough on the ball, can beat a player on the outside and seems to have good delivery with his left foot. I don't think he is quite good enough at receiving the ball in tight spaces or dynamic enough to be a really effective left winger, but as he is gradually learning to defend properly with more and more games at left back he is looking better and better. I would leave him at Sunderland for the whole season and then by next season I think we'll have a genuine alternative option to Ekotto.

August 2014:

I also think that some people may revise their opinion of Rose this season, with us likely to have a more balanced shape to our defensive play.

September 2014:

I think we have already seen an improvement in Danny Rose's application on the pitch now he knows that he has a £10 million player giving him competition for his place. I thought that last season under both managers (but specifically AVB) certain players were frozen out or knew they would always play if fit so didn't have to give their all.

I agree with you here. Rose is a good example. He has probably been our best player this season (certainly was yesterday) has improved defensively, been a real threat going forward and is now clearly working harder for the team - and yet there are still a lot of Spurs fans who **** him off at any opportunity.

I am with you here 100% I think Rose also is a player that does this. He looks to make things happen and constantly looks to get himself in a position to make a difference in an attacking sense, even if he has done so previously and delivered a poor ball. One of the things that I liked about both Defoe and Robbie Keane was that irrespective of what had happened before in the game they would still look to put themselves into the positions to make a difference.

October 2014:

I think that is unfair on Rose. No player will ever have a 100% completion rate with their crosses and Rose has put in a number of good balls this season - either getting them into the right areas between the opposition's defenders and their keeper or to a players feet in the box. I think a team of our means would seriously struggle to find a better left back than Danny Rose in both an attacking and defensive sense. After Lloris, Rose is the last player that I would be replacing in our team at the moment.

November 2014

Any left back who has to defend behind Chadli would look weak positionally. Yet despite having two players to defend against in just about every game this season Rose has been consistently one of our best 3 or 4 players in each game.

Feb 2015:

I said it before and I'll say it again.... He will be in the England squad this year and challenging Baines for a starting spot too.

March 2015

I am with you here.... I think Rose's ceiling is much higher than that of Davies, who will never have the pace and ability to get up and back like Rose does. I think Rose will probably be England's first choice fullback within a year or two.

April 2015:

One of the reasons for me always being a fan of Rose was because I could see how well he did despite the handicap of often having two players to worry about. That being said I thought Davies excelled himself on Saturday in terms of having an absolute stinker.

May 2015:

Rose. IMO the best left back in the Premier League, has the hardest job in our team having to play behind Chadli, yet still produces.

Now where do I apply for that scouting job? ;)

I'd like to see your comments in 2013 ;)

Could only find one.... (it was after West Ham had just beaten us 3-0 at WHL):

From what I have seen of us so far this season we are generally going to dominate possession in every game. We have creative passers in Ericksen and Holtby, players who can arrive in the box to finish chances in Paulinho and Siggurdson and we have players who can beat their opposite number at will in Dembele and Townsend. These sorts of players will ensure that we end up creating enough chances to win games both at home and away.
Many teams are likely to come to WHL this season and play like West Ham did. To counter this AVB is going to have to find a way to make sure the game can become more stretched. Lennon coming back may allow Townsend to play on the left and give us true width on both wings. Rose coming back will also add balance as the left side can then operate in a similar way to the right - time will tell there.

My mates slagged off Rose some thing chronic and I was a staunch defender.. Purely because he was knew to the position and looked bloody good at Sunderland

Now they think he it the best full back in the league ... So opinions change

I didn't mean for you to go searching. I was just kidding, but looks like you stayed on message about Rose from the get go so fair dues.

My comments on Rose were not as kind at all I'll freely admit. I really didn't see his upturn in form as likely and wanted rid. Glad to be proven wrong though.

He openly admitted earlier in the season that his fitness has improved which is vital for his role

He also has better support from midfield (which could be improved more)

Plus he has managed to stay fit for most of the season

Looking back, there are lots of people who saw something in Rose.

2013:

Put his body on the line today. Gave it everything. The way Palace lined up, the wide players had more space. He looked fantastic. Needs to mature and feel like he belongs in the side. I think he'll do well, but like Walker, polarise opinion.

Pace, commitment, good attacking game. He just has to keep calm, not foul, and make sure he defends well.

Then you get the same people saying: where's the passion and fight? Rose just wants it - a lot. And that boils over. He will mature given a chance. When he doesn't have the ball he's not patient. Walker was exactly the same. Similar comments where levelled at Walker.

Just give the guy a chance. He's an asset and needs support.

The interesting thing is, without Poch, Rose might have drifted away. Poch has helped him no doubt. Fans always get carried away, Rose was never as bad as some made out, and he's not yet as good as as he could be. We need Walker back playing well. We missed stability at right back this season

Kudos to the few .. I would argue that either they really have an eye, or were just being really optimistic. (like people who thought Hudd would be the next big thing).

Quite honestly, I remember thinking any manager who would play both Rose & Naughton in the same game should be fired, they were so poor at times, having both of them almost immediately meant conceding.

Now Rose is one of maybe 5 players who to me are guaranteed to start next season as first choice .. funny world.

Your view and the time was fair based on how you saw the games he played and there is nothing wrong with that

Surely the key is admitting that you now think he is a better much improved player and giving him the credit for it which you are

I was critical of chaldi last season and saw nothing in him... This season he hasn't changed his overall game much but his goals have been vital and had a massive impact on games. He has to be given credit for that and I admit I was wrong

Think he's been more consistent than Kane myself and our player of the season. Although I don't doubt Kane will win it as he grabs the headlines...

Kane has to win it. His performances have won matches, I believe his goals have contributed more points than any other player in the league. As good as Rose has been, not many of his performances have won games for us, or saved them.

I don't want to sound like like I'm taking anything away from Kane, he's been great. As good as that stat is you mentioned about Kane, that just highlights how average most of our squad is because if he was at one of the big teams he wouldn't of contributed to as many points and relates to my point that he'll get player of the year because he's a striker so scores goals and grabs the headlines - a left back such has Rose stands no chance in comparison to a striker who's performed well. But Kane rarely played in the Pl for first two/three months and has gone off the boil past month or so if not longer(to be expected at some, point of course). Rose has been consistently good and has featured all season bar one or two off days.

Overlooked again for the latest England squad with Bertrand and Gibbs getting the nod. Hodgson such an old fool.
