Cristian Romero

England had similar paths in prior tournaments under Southgate but still slipped up in the Croatia and France games. Argentina made their finals and won one of them. We're still happy to call our captain world class though.

I don't think you can really use the opposition as a gauge for the world class tag. It is what it is, and you beat who is in front of you right?
People aren't calling Kane world class off of the back of a World Cup. They are looking back at him putting in ridiculous numbers ten plus seasons in a row. Romero has barely had a consistent 'world class' season and that is the difference - he doesn't do anything consistently, except lose his head....

England didn't have a Messi (or referee) to bail them out when it mattered

Argentina also looked ropey at the back and needed the forward players to get them through, less to do with their defence.

In Romeros defence, its had to win things at Spurs, but for him to be considered world class he needs to go to Madrid and start winning things domestically, or at least going close.

Or at least start putting in more than a handful of good games a season

Just wondering... what would people prefer? A £35M transfer to Atletico or a £50M one to the gooners???
Everyone wants (or at least understands the reasons for) Romero to be gone this summer. No one is going to lose any sleep over it. However, them lot would see it as a victory to take our current captain and would celebrate it despite that.

So Atletico for me. Plus I think I’ll enjoy watching him in the champions league under Simeone

he was the best defender in Serie A which led us to purchase him, his first couple of season here he was extraordinarily good

Manager turn around in the last 5 years, hardly conducive to consistency. Might also explain why performances and preference for the settled nature of international football.

Nuno
Antonio
Stel
Mason (cant remember in what order)
Ange
Frank
Tudor
RDZ

Romero aside from the convo, its hardly like the club as a whole or any player has managed a long level of consistency in that mess.

End of the day he is going, Athletico are a huge club and good luck to him, he will do well there. He goes with my thanks for the EL win

Romero has played 350 senior games. Fans needs to look at the player across that many minutes of football, and then what you actually find is an incredible footballer. Like Kane, there is a reason he is rated at the highest elite level. If his heart was in Spurs and he wanted to fight all our other defenders for a shirt there is no doubt in my mind that he'd win it. Yes, he'd have to adapt a little and stay a little calmer on the pitch but he would easily rated as the best defender in the PL alongside the Arsenal pair, especially Saliba.

I think over a 3 year period he was one of the best keeper in the world, certainly was up there.

BTW I have said very very good, not world class
World class tends to be bandied about like peanuts nowadays... Romero is not world class - not even close.... Baresi was world class; so was Maldini; Beckenbauer; for Argentina... Passarella. Don't get wrong.... as you say, he's a very good defender at a time when these are pretty thin on the ground... he can also be world class in a few games... but Cuti does not even stand close to one foot of these true greats in terms of consistency and greatness.

...and I am not saying it through a jilted lover complex.... said exactly the same thing last year.

Don't really agree....it's usually just a character trait. And I'm not saying it's necessarily a negative one either.

I think players are sometimes humans that we also judge harshly (I do it). I think it can 100% be both.

Players who have great attitudes tend to leave clubs that have as much issues as we have and the ones that stay get dragged down with it. Son being an absolute gent would be in my experience an exception to the rule

Yup. Hes still not world class though :D I have no issue with anyone rating him, but he's not world class no matter how it's dressed up - he wouldn't even be in the top 2 CBs at this club in the modern era FFS.

There is a dearth of top quality CBs at the moment, even if you want to argue that Romero is one of the better ones in current times that doesn't make him world class. There is no set rule that there has to be world class players in every position every year football exists. Romero is too inconsistent to be in that bracket, can't even be relied on to be on the pitch. Last 2 seasons he's missed 15 and 20 league matches, that's a crazy amount....

That's cool, I have said he is very very good

Lets put it this way. he has the talent but not the mental fortitude to be the best in the world. He has games where he is really on it and is also a danger at the opposite end. But he loses concentration at times and self control. For those reasons he will never be at the top level. But. Maybe in spain where the game is slower he can be. We should not be selling him at a reduced amount to get him out. We have to pay top dollar so should any interested team. They can always split the payements over a few years.

he is worth at least 60m. We just paid 52m for Van Hecke with 1 year left. I would not sell him to the goons though. For the reasons stated above. They will see it as a win. And why would he go there to be back up to Gabriel and Saliba when they are fit.

He needs and wants to go to Spain. So just go already.

Not even top 5... Ledley, Toby, Jan, C*ntbell and Woodgate were better and more consistent defenders...
