Cristian Romero

In the PL the top 3 IMO are in no particular order; Romero, Saliba and Dias
I think Silva at Chelsea has to be in the conversation aswell.

As for Romero, last season I was critical of him - nothing to do with his ability, but he was making stupid rash decisions on a pretty consistent basis. Whilst he quite obviously is an aggressive type of defender, perhaps that was reflective of his frustrations of the teams direction last season.

But this season he really is thriving with the additional responsibility, perhaps being a father now has also helped in some way? Winning the World Cup can't hurt either:cool: What a player, Paratici earnt his money on this guy alone....

He has to be one of the best CBs in the world. I can't think of too many near as good as him.

Wouldn't want to disagree with Messi...

Yeah, he's up there. There are others, he's not at a level where he's clearly above the other best CBs around. But he's up there.

Said it before, but he's the one established player at the club and in the PL in that back four and GK. He takes so much responsibility and seems to do so with ease. Absolutely tremendous player.

I think putting him in the captaincy group, the underlying message of this a young side and the experienced heads (he's a WC winner), him, Son, Maddison, need to lead/support the youngsters.

He's always had moments/games where his quality was obvious, he's now doing what great players do, making it consistent, game in, game out.

Think it suits him playing in a slightly exposed defence where he can charge about putting out fires. He's a great reactionary heroic defender.

Interesting his personal heat map view is not wildly different between last season and this (the all teams is). His fouls/cards have been vastly improved on but the rest of his game similar.

Guess we just fixed the brick around him.

I think so. It felt like he was trying to do too much. Could have been a lack of faith of what was around him, and being asked of him and the team.

We have Son and Maddison at one end, it Romero and VDV are forming just a strong partnership at the other.

Surprised me against Palace. Some late and harsh tackles coming in from them on others and himself. Really expected some violence in return at some point.

Perhaps the opportunity just didn't arise...

The tinkle take passing between him and Vicario was fun though.

Still seemed more under control compared to last season.
But I can see how there is a strong connection and mental strength in vicario, vdv and cuti. 3 of them control the defensive area significantly better compared to 4 of loris, Davies, Dier and cutie.

Getting the Chuckle Brothers in to coach the defence finally paid off.

He does and they do.

Udogie is great defensively too imo. Porro proving himself to be a very good defender. Bissouma and Sarr. The pressing from the front.

I do think Romero is really important to the whole functioning as it does. Particularly with our lack of options.

VdV does cover in behind quite a bit. But that's happening mostly on our left. It's not like Romero and Porro are regularly racing back and being rescued by VdV. They're mostly dealing with their side brilliantly.

Romero is better than Davies on the left and he works well with VDV too. Very versatile.

Porro to me is still the weakest link in defence. Not that he is bad at all, but if I were the opponent i'd definitely be trying to bomb our right flank/far post with high balls.
