Classic Signings - Rafael Van Der Vaart

Those stats certainly do put my memories into perspective...slightly skewed maybe? I suppose I just sigh when I see him in the same list as Hoddle, Gascoigne, Modric, Bale, Kane, Son...I'd put him in the Berba category, and even then I'd take Berba every time...but I have to say, the stats do paint a good picture, and perhaps my memory is rusty.
I’d wager 99% of Spurs fans do put him in the Berba category not the Modric, Bale category?

He was only here for a couple of years so the Berba or Kilnsmann category is fair enough. Anyone in that category has to be a magnificent player though and VdV was certainly that.

That said, he’s a bit of a mouth without the brains to back it up from some of the brick I’ve heard come out of him.

We didn't win knock-out games. We didn't win the cup semi-final he played in. We didn't win the CL QF we were in. I am not saying it was on him to do so, but he didn't drag us through massive games. Of course the NLD @ emirates was massive. Enjoyable but overrated IMO.

We might have stood more of a chance in the CL QF had Crouch not got brainlessly, almost Romero like red carded and Gomes not chucked in a Gomes like goal.

VDV was quality. He needed better forwards around him. We had Defoe, Crouch and Adebayor.

Soft first yellow as I recall...second one was silliness for sure.

It's fascinating to look back even to what Jol did.
He soldified us, he brought in experience in Naybet and Davids to train through Ledley and Carrick (I think that's one of the things which made the Carrick departure so much more disappointing, then under Ramos we had a really decent core and some good balance which needed just a couple more key signings (remember how even Boeteng came to fruition?) only for Levy to not just sell Berba but grimly hold onto him for an extra couple of millions, deprive us of any chance to get a decent replacement, think he's pulled a masterclass in getting Frazier Campbell (!!!!) AND THEN sell Keane right near the end too! Breathtaking...THEN, as @Jurgen the German and @Bishop have said, we get the Redknapp era which could've seen us really push on, even under AVB we have moment where Moutinho is actually at our facility and photographed in our shirt yet we somehow f**k that one up for the manager, and then comes the era that many did not fully appreciate as it was happening (Poch) and for me, some of the most egregious moments of all...(I did not expect to end up back at Poch but hey, there we go)...

It feels pretty undeniable that Moersen has made an enormous difference in our transfer activity. I think there's merit to observing that Lange is a youth talent spotter, but when you want to get business done, it seems like you need a guy like Moersen. If the Tonali links deliver -he seems to be a player DeZerbi loves and with whom Tonali has good vibes- then it will mark the fastest and most positive 'for manager' business I think we'll have done in the Prem era.

The other fascinating element is that no manager I can remember has received the carte blanche DeZerbi currently has at the club. New era indeed...

Steady on mate, 2 of our 3 transfers in thus far were targeted prior to RDZ's arrival and should Savinho join that would be a further long standing target brought in. I would expect/hope that he has given his approval to these deals but it doesn't point to carte blanche, more so that the club is invested in overhauling the squad - I'm sure the manager will have final say on the deals so the rebuild will be shaped around his wants and needs.

I'm sticking by the statement, albeit (to state the obvious) not being in the Cheese Room daily what do I really know LOL!

I hear there is a huge keeness to get him specifically what he wants. Robertson? Yes, you're right. Senesi? I'd guess he was heavily involved in that. van Hecke? His. If we push Tonali through, that'll be his. I don't think you will see a 'club signing' this summer, all will be on DeZerbi's approval not simply agreement. I'm equally interested to see who leaves, which will perhaps be an even greater sign of RDZ's influence. I think we will take the money for Vuskovic if he pushed and if we think there's 45 mill on the table, and I still would not bet against a Bergvall perhas being sold (we already know Sarr is likely out).
We'll see how it pans out.

We will.

Seems pretty reckless to me thus far, but time will tell.
