Circus ManUnitus - Nobody's At The Wheel

Plenty, its Man United and he is getting a tune out their top players, players talk so the fact he has Pogba onside will be a huge draw.

Sadly it's not enough at a club the size of United, the top top players want a big name sadly these days.
I'm delighted for Ole he seems like a nice guy.
But Scholes could have had a similar effect and after Mourinho, Freddie Kruger could have had a points bounce?

Mind he has now signed Ashly Young credit where credits due.

I actually think at a club like Utd who the manager is isnt especially important to a player.

The prestige, stage and wages are far higher on the list of priorities.

Providing the manager will play you, and play you in a position you like, I doubt a player cares too much.

Chances are they will outlast the manager anyway. So its far more about that contract than anything else...

Do you think that? Man United is a huge club and Ole is a club legend, I think thats enough to be honest and I havent seen or heard a player not sign for a club because the manager not being a name, although it may have happened, just I have not seen it.

I think having Poch at the club can attract players of a certain type to us - take for example Sanchez.

He didnt specifically state Poch was the reason, but he turned down Barca because he knew he would play and develop here - so Poch was the reason.

A manager can have a big impact on incoming players. But not always. And at the top top clubs I actually think its of far less importance.

Anyone signing for Madrid, Bayern, City, Utd... they know the manager will probably change within a season or two. And they dont care, because its Madrid, Bayern, City, Utd...

Its good management in so much as its the right thing to do at this point.

But its literally the most obvious thing that needed to happen, so I wouldnt describe it as "huge level of management".

I think when you talk man management side I think it does. It might seem the obvious thing to do but as many can't do it including the great Jose its not always as easy as it seems, I mean its easy for us to discuss on a forum but in reality with so many variables including players egos and the like I bet its alot harder than it looks.

LVG, Moyes and Jose all to an extent let their ego cloud their judgement rather than letting the team play to its strengths which for me highlights how hard managers make it for themselves when the solution is often simple, in itself I believe a HUGE skill, its the same in day to day life and management.

Yeh I agree on this, where as the next tier might need a profile manager, I feel Arsenal are seeing this, their manager was one of them couple of year managers at PSG, player went there for money not him, he left and he does not on his own have the profile to attract them to Arsenal on name alone, not that Arsenal are in the same ball park as PSG but PSG was bigger draw than Emery.

I just cant take "dont be an egotistical prick" and "let players enjoy playing" as any sort of managerial masterclass.

It is the most fundamental and basic part of the job.

The example of Solskjaer does not show how good he is, rather how bad the like of Mourinho were (and its exactly what we were all saying at the time).

What he is doing right now is the absolute basics, theres no way that can be "huge level of management".

Getting the job full time, spending the summer training them, and then going into next season with the same form and a clearer team shape and strategy - that would be much more "huge" IMO.

And its what Im waiting to see. Ive no love for Utd, nor Solskjaer specifically, but he seems like a really good guy and Id like to see if he has what it takes. Am watching with interest.

As it is, this could easily be the new manager bounce and all he actually has going for him.

Even Matteo won the CL on the back of that!

That so many get wrong. Knowing what and what not to do is a huge skill. making things overly complicated for players when the solution is sometimes more simple.

Man management is the biggest part of the game in my opinion

Id agree man management is one of the biggest parts of the job. Now you mention it, my gut is to disagree it is THE biggest, but its something Id need to mull over.

Its a complicated job. Man management is a massive thing, but so is spotting talent, so is setting a team up tactically, so is training players to understand what they need to do and when, so is balancing the needs of now vs the needs of the future...

And Im not sure which Id suggest is the most important. I think they all are as a first instinct.

If any one of them is missing, or really lacking, a manager will only go so far (and often fail).

So far, basic common sense is all there is to show for Solskjaer. Not really something to crow about, IMHO.

That other managers have lacked it is more to their detriment than Oles credit, for me.

Id want to see much more of the above before lauding Solskjaers managerial ability. Until then he is very much in the "wait and see" camp, for me.

If Ole gets the gig I'm happy from Spurs POV and he Ole seems like a nice bloke so good luck to him. Think their board will mess it up in the end.

They've had an easy run of games too which was a massive advantage. We were the only decent team they came up against and we should have spanked them. They got away with that one. Let's see how they get on against a few harder teams

Spanked Arsenal away to be fair and handed out a fair few drubbings.

It will become harder but I personally think its going to be a good fit for them

I dont.

The board were clearly at odds with Mourinho and the way he wanted to manage.

We know specifically in the type of player he wanted to buy - proven and expensive work horses vs the boards preference of younger, talented players that can appreciate.

Id wager there were other differences as well. Fergie fostered a lot of togetherness, it seems, Id suggest Mourinho is the opposite....

Solkskjaer, on the other hand, appears to be very much the sort of manager the board would want. He has done a lot to bring the club together, send the right message, get young players playing and playing well. He has adopted a more attacking ethos.. I mean, they look more like a Fergie team right now than they have at any time since Fergie retired.

I dont know if he'll get the job (if I were betting, Id say yes, but who knows?!) but I do think he and the board are singing from the same hymn sheet

They will surprise me if they ride out a sticky patch without panicking and a Manuel from Barcelona coming in instead of 'good old Ole'.

Anybody board who consider Mourinho for their club is a worry.
Mourinho to Ole, the ridiculous to the sublime.

I would have actually preferred Poch was still their first choice, and we would have got to see Poch reject them and the media having to do some serious backtracking after all this Poch to Utd narrative thats been going on for so long. Then Utd having to crawl back to Ole as clear second choice.....

Too devious for me!
But I like your style!

Hopefully they continue to waste hundreds of £millions on mercenaries like Alexis Sanchez in the meantime!

Watching them at the weekend the odd one out was Lukaku, everyone else playing with pace and he was just slowing it all down badly, looked terrible.
