Why? Just because he's talked about leaving? Surely most players are thinking about leaving at some time or another? Doesn't necessarily mean they won't continue giving their all once they've come round to staying put.

I remain concerned that Eriksen will be a tough act to follow. His vision, work ethic, positional play and almost telepathic understanding of how to make the team tick make for a rare combination. Of course he also has his drawbacks, which player doesn't?

But whoever comes in for him could well take a season or two to adjust, and even then there's no guarantee they will be an upgrade.

So for me it remains a case of be careful what you wish for.

I think Poch has already investigated different ways of playing which don’t necessarily rely on him. If he could’ve shifted a few last season I think we’d already have seen more of it. If he stays, great as long as we move forward and do what we need to do to not have him be the fulcrum point of all. That is not to denigrate him in any way, more to ensure that stage two of Poch’s work continues apace. I think if we could move a couple out and sign LoCelso too (for Poch) we would be in a win-win. The only way that happens is if Eriksen waits out one more year. For which he won’t get a pay-rise which saves us money. We appear to be doing the right thing given the circumstances...

Clearly if Eriksen wants out and continues to decline a new contract then we need to let him go.

But what I'm saying is if he fails to get his big move this summer and therefore decides to sign a new contract with us instead that would be my preferred outcome. New arrivals do not come with a guarantee whereas Eriksen has shown season after season exactly what he can do for us and how important he is to the team.

"I do not care what players think, but if a player does not want to be here and says it in the press or in an interview then he can go."

From what I remember Son did not giving interviews saying he wanted to leave he just approached Poch who talked him round. I do not worry about what I do not know about. Eriksen on the other hand has had over a year to sign a new contract and added to that has now said he wants out.

So if the key for you is the player talking to the press I assume you also wanted Rose out after complaining to the Sun of all rags about having to google the names of players coming in and lifting his skirt for United.

And what about Modric? Fuming all over the media about his desire to get away yet once he realised he had no choice he knuckled down and gave us the benefit of one more season of his brilliance.

We cannot afford to be too precious when it comes to top talents, neither do we need to, it's cutting your nose to spite your face.

The way I see it is if he signs again, we've signed a £100mil player. It is as simple as that for me. If he was playing for another team we'd be tossing ourselves silly over signing him. Players like Eriksen don't come along every day.

Depends, if it’s the Eriksen of last season I don’t think he’d be a £100m player at all. But with some good rest, a clear mind about his future lying here etc I’m sure he can pick up his form again....

Christian Eriksen has confirmed his desire to quit Tottenham this summer but Spurs face a major dilemma

Tottenham have been left with a major dilemma over Christian Eriksen after holding a fresh round of talks to resolve his future.

Unsettled Eriksen has reiterated that his refusal to sign a new deal is not about money but he is desperate to win major trophies.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy must now decide whether to cut his losses and sell this summer - or risk losing Eriksen for free when his contract expires in 12 months’ time.

Eriksen, 27, has already gone public in saying that he is ready for a new challenge and Spurs’ hopes of keeping him appear to be fading.

Levy has previously set sky-high demands on Eriksen of up to £150m but reports in Spain suggest Real Madrid believe they can get him for £65m because there is only one year left on his deal.

Eriksen’s representatives are due to meet Real Madrid to see if they will bid and that may depend on if they can do a deal for Manchester United ’s Paul Pogba.

United are also interested in Eriksen and the Danish playmaker does know that he could command a far bigger contract than what Spurs have been offering.

It is an unusual scenario for Tottenham because Levy never normally allows any player to run down a contract and especially not down to the final two years.

Levy once threatened to leave former striker Peter Crouch out of the first team squad when he refused to sign a new deal but it is hard to imagine the same happening with Eriksen.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is likely to want to keep on picking him if he does stay but Tottenham could also use the cash on rebuilding if they cash in this summer.

They have already agreed a £64m deal for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele who is undergoing a medical at the club ahead of completing the deal.

But they could carry on spending if they bring in serious cash for Eriksen with Fulham left back Ryan Sessegnon set on moving to Tottenham this summer.

He may well have said 'it's not about money' (they all do!) but I'd be amazed if he also said it's because he's 'desperate to win major trophies.'

Unlike John I hate Tottenham Cross, Eriksen is just not that stupid.
