Christian Benteke

he's okay. Like i've said before, who else was going to do it at Aston Villa?.. was Andy Johnson worth £25m when he scored all those goals for a struggling Crystal Palace team? or James Beattie for that struggling Southampton side?

Bent should have done it at Villa....however Lambert wanted a defender from the front......a prescence up front to create space for weimann & nzogbia ect.......... Johnson had great pace & no strength.....Beattie had a nack for being right place right time - this guy is more than ok in my opinion his shooting technique and movement are really good for such a young striker...... and unlike Johnson & Beattie he has the power & the pace.

The guys a knob anyway. Went on strike at Gent so he could move to Villa, now he's handing in a transfer request at Villa after one year. No respect to the teams that have made him somewhat relevant in the footballing world. He'd do the exact same to us.

Yes the guy is a tool and is being disrespectful and has previous.........I admire nice guy players who doesn't.......but im willing to let a wan*** into the our team if he gets us 15 + goals and scares the crap out of opposition cb's this creating space for Bale to weave his magic........so what if he acts up with us if he has had an immense season we will be quids in....

Its a nice thought but how many players are truly loyal????? lol clubs use players and discard them when there not wanted - players use clubs as stepping stones - we will find it hard to find a great striker who wants to stay at Tottenham forever........

we would use him he would use us....if he was successful got us into ucl 2 seasons in a row its win-win.

I say or rather I hope we push for this..... but its all good mumorm I have had my say.... I respect your opinion dude- who knows where benteke will be in 5 years time - Madrid or Maidstone..........fook knows.

again its a matter of acting quickly on this if we are interested, because once Liverpool sell Suarez, Arse fail to get Higuain, or Chelsea fail to get Rooney, they will probably all tun their attention to Benteke and then we will have a problem

Levy might actually be prepared to go to 25 mill on this one......young, on low wages at Villa apparently (30k a week) so will prob be satisfied with 60-80k a week at Spurs which fits into our scale, the 25 mill most likely will be paid in stages over 4 years

like i said though, we'll have to be quick imo

Benteke's agent earlier this summer.........

Kismet told Sky Sports: "Christian and I are surprised and disgusted by a story in the Sun newspaper claiming Benteke can do what he wants.

"He has been misquoted. The true line is that Christian does not want to make a war with Aston Villa.

"If there is interest, which is normal after the season he has had, no way will problems be made by Christian and myself. That is what he said in the interview!

"He's more than happy to stay if he has to stay. But we all know he had a good season and it's normal that maybe other teams are more interested in him, and he might be interested to play European football which is his right.

"If there is a team, a bigger team playing European football next season, that shows interest to Villa concerning Christian, I would be lying if I said Christian would ignore that.

"But at the same time Villa have the right to say whatever is going to happen with Christian next year, and Christian will have his word also because it's his career.

"It's no use with all respect to go to Southampton or Norwich. If he can improve himself in a footballistic way, okay, why not? But it's up to Aston Villa and that supposed team to get an agreement."

..............

interesting thing there is that the agent mentions "european football" and not CL football.......I think Spurs could convince him quite easily to join

Handing in a transfer request smacks of cheatski. Have we or arsenal ever got a player to do that to force a move through? Think you'd need your head turned with big wages to do that.

Benteke's agent also represents our old friend El Hamadoui, so Levy knows who he is dealing with. It all helps ;)

We won't get him as we been linked with him for weeks. Our signings come out of the blue.

Vertonghen was ready to give up on money owed to him by Ajax in order to force through his move to Spurs last summer

This. If we buy him, he's a success, but we fail to get CL football again, he'll be whining his way towards a richer club for sure.

Question is, does it matter? At least we will know this when we buy him, as opposed to Berbatov and Modric. It will soften the blow when he wants to move on, surely.

I cannot see him going to Cheatski to sit on the bench or get loaned out for 3 seasons and if Arsenal grt Higuain then we are the only decent option left for him apart from going abroad.

Tracked by Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea, the 22-year-old knows how desirable he is after a sensational first Premier League season, and has picked his moment perfectly

COMMENT
By Liam Twomey

To some, it was ungrateful. To others, understandable. But whoever you are, nobody can deny that, with Aston Villa’s confirmation late on Monday evening that he has submitted a formal transfer request, Christian Benteke has got your attention.

And that, of course, is the point. The 22-year-old’s stock could barely be higher after a sensational first season in England which saw him score 19 Premier League goals in a struggling side.

What better time than now, then, to expose the pressing nature of his ambition? Last month Goal reported that Liverpool and Tottenham had made enquiries about him. Now Chelsea have joined the chase. Benteke knows how desirable he is, and has picked his moment perfectly.

Many of a Villa persuasion will view his actions as anything from ingratitude to outright betrayal.

Benteke got his chance in the Premier League because Paul Lambert was willing to stake £7 million of a limited transfer budget on his talent, and a foolish red card against Chelsea on May 11 briefly left his club facing the prospect of a final-day relegation play-off with Wigan, shorn of the man who had a direct hand in 40 per cent of their league goals last season.

But few within football see things in such moralistic terms. Benteke himself would no doubt argue, with justification, that his 23 goals in all competitions and consistently stellar performances ensured Villa’s investment was more than aptly repaid. If, as expected, he commands a big fee this summer, the relationship will become even more lucrative for owner Randy Lerner.

In a bullish statement, Villa insisted they are not inclined to sell their star man for anything less than their valuation – unlikely to be under the £20m mark – while Lambert was at pains to leave the door open for reconciliation, though his words carried an air of desperation.

The bottom line is that the cards are stacked in Benteke's favour. Lerner will be inclined to accept a generous enough offer, the Belgian’s current £20,000-a-week wages mean personal terms will almost certainly not be an obstacle, and there are simply too many interested parties to make another season at Villa Park a likely ending to the transfer saga that is now inevitable.

Yet there is no reason why Villa cannot also emerge from this as winners. The two questions which remain are ‘how much?’ and ‘who to?’ The answers will be conditioned by the strength of Lerner's resolve and the level of anxiety in those searching for attacking reinforcements this summer.

In this regard, the early signs are good for Villa. Chelsea have missed out on Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani to Ligue 1's emerging superpowers, Robert Lewandowski has his heart set on Bayern Munich, and Manchester United appear once more, at least publicly, to be laying claim to Wayne Rooney's future.

Top-class options are growing thin on the ground, but Jose Mourinho still needs more than a faded Fernando Torres, below-par Demba Ba and an unrefined Romelu Lukaku.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have missed out on Andre Villas-Boas’ No.1 target, David Villa, while long-time muse Leandro Damiao is being courted by Napoli and Southampton. A new striker remains a must, and Benteke fits the classic Daniel Levy mould: young, talented and no threat to the prized wage structure.

Liverpool's sincerity of interest depends on the realisation – and timing – of Luis Suarez's desired departure to Real Madrid. Arsenal - Benteke's boyhood club - are pre-occupied with haggling over a fee for Gonzalo Higuain, but an audacious enquiry and rumoured bid for the Merseysiders' unsettled Uruguayan indicates they are prepared to consider lavishly expensive alternatives should talks with los Blancos collapse.

A bidding war would benefit Benteke and Villa, while increasing the risk for his inevitable buyer. As some have learned to their cost, debut seasons are not always a reliable sample size for judging a prospective big-money purchase. Michael Ricketts scored 15 Premier League goals in his, while Andy Carroll scored 11 in his first five months in the top flight.

Yet watching the Belgian's lightning adaptation to the English game over the past year, it is clear his success is not simply down to soaring confidence, blind luck or a polished gameplan specifically designed to hide glaring weaknesses – mainly because he does not appear to have any.

Surprisingly fast, formidably strong, technically slick and increasingly clinical with either foot or head, he has all the makings of a fearsome, intelligent, modern European striker.

Paying a marquee price at this stage would be a gamble, but not an outrageous one. There are no guarantees in football, but Benteke already looks capable of enhancing almost any attack in the Premier League, and logic suggests there is further improvement to come.

Judging by his actions on Monday, the man himself believes so too.

If we wanted to sign Benteke I would imagine it could be a tricky one to complete. I can see Villa playing everyone off against each other for the next few weeks before the bidding gets to 25m+ and then it gets to that point when you start to wonder if it's worth it.

whoever signs Benteke will be overpaying thats for sure. Everything is loaded in Villa's favour tbh because the supply of good strikers is dwindling every week.

Villa paid 7 mill for Benteke and to turn that into 20-25 mill after one season is pretty spectacular, and clubs like Arse, Chelsea and Spurs have no choice but to consider paying up as there are not many other alternatives

Yeah and you can see why. He has all the attributes to do extremely well as a striker in the Premiership. Tall, strong, fast, uses his strength wisely, fearless, finishing ability, intelligence, hard-working. This guy should be the real deal. 2bh he'd be an ideal long-term replacement for Drogba in that Chelsea team.

I hope we get him, but could see Chelsea blowing us out the water on this one as the deal would be a big stretch for us financially.

If we are interested this could go on for weeks, we need to get players in and get them a proper pre season with AVB and the gang, no feckin' long winded transfer BS.

Noe Pamarot went on a strike to join us.

Vertonghen did everything correct in my opinion. Said he would have no problem playing another year for Ajax and wait to move untill he's out of contract.
Nothing wrong with that, Ajax were given an option to either get what money they could, or to have him honor his contract and leave when it has expired.

I don't think it's a bad thing with a player handing in a transfer request to be honest.
Shows he is willing to lose out on money from selling club to get his move, and he makes his intentions clear. Clean way of doing stuff.
I have much more against players who cry when offers aren't accepted and do every trick in the book to force a clubs hand
- everything BUT to hand in a transfer request, as they are greedy fudges and want their "loyalty" bonus.

Here's some info from a reliable Belgian source: @HLNinEngeland Christian #Benteke is keen on a move to #THFC, not to #CFC.

Interesting. But will we match Villa's valuation? I can see this drag on until August 31st...
