Starting him makes sense. If he copes, then fine, if not you bring on a substitute.

The alternative is put him on the bench and bring him on later. Then if he breaks down the sub has been made.

In the middle of the season with other considerations, then this is not so simple, but for the last, and most important, game of the season it makes perfect sense. The international coach might have other considerations.
