Your situation sounds EXACTLY the same as mine was a few months ago. I worked for my last company for 4 years, who promised big things when I joined, but never delivered. Despite being constantly told I was doing an amazing job, the magical promotion never came. To cut a long story very short, I decided in around August I wanted to leave and do some travelling, so eventually left my job in December. I've been in Australia ever since, just relaxing and doing a bit of backpacking. In this time I've been able to clear my head and after alot of thinking I've decided that when I get back in a couple of weeks I'm gonna start studying to become a sound engineer. I had been working in IT support for about 6 years, the last 2 years of which have been a real misery. Now really looking forward to getting started with this sound engineering stuff.
My advice would be if you're hearts not really in IT, try and take the time to decide what you really want to do.
