BUILDING A SIEGE MENTALITY IN THE NEXT MONTH

Sonny Walters
I think tactics and formations/shapes are secondary at this point.
We need to rapidly, rapidly feed our collective psyche as a football club.
PGMOL decisions, etc, whatever. They are poor and they have happened and they will continue to happen unless we stop feeling sorry for ourselves.
I look at who is currently available, and it is more than enough to start winning.
And for me, the main reason we are not winning, is because our psyche has been battered into bewilderment via square pegs/round holes, bricky instructions, and a lack of confidence.
These are mostly very young men. So how can the club help them?

1) Step up the complaints to the authorities. Start acting like those 'big' clubs and continue, at pace, what we began this week, finally.
2) Supporters need to support EVERY player, vigorously defend them against any criticism, and aggressively take a 'STFU We Are Tottenham' perspective publicly. SING current player's names, STOP slagging on the likes of Romero, continue to be as loud as possible, absolutely ROAR at every poor decision, make EVERY opposition player uncomfortable.
3) Tudor now needs to start publicly saying he believes in these players.
4) Tudor needs to play round pegs/round holes wherever possible.
5) Club needs to brief the likes of Dawson, Sherwood, Jenas and others to be aggressively proactive whenever they get the chance, and to speak UP our potential and qualities. Club also needs to see if there is any way they can push some friendly faces into spotlit media positions in the coming weeks (not sure that is possible)?
6) Identify a player or two, maybe Richarlison, maybe Danso, and give a couple of the press 'exclusives' with them where these guys talk the club and their teammates UP.

The current perception around us is that we are a soft bewildered bunch of namby-pambys drifting gently to relegation.
That perception needs to change so as it can infuse itself into the players now.

It's tough, but at the same time incredibly easy. We have no choice...

p.s. this might well be my 'inside voice self-therapy' post???!!!!!!!!

Agree on all counts.

We all need to start acting like we believe, then we might be able to instil some actual belief and some actual confidence. I agree that even with our injuries we should have enough to win some games. But in elite sport so much of it is in the headspace. And our players simply don’t seem to have any beliefs. We need to get players that are undeniably up for a fight - like Richi - and put themselves front and centre. Then let everyone else feed off them.

The Club can do its bit as well: couple of free drinks to everyone that turns up for the games will help oil the crowd and get some noise developing. What’s a few hundred thousand pints of beer of it helps keep the club up?

I like that. Any gesture!

We’re effectively two points above West Ham and Forest and can overtake Leeds tomorrow. We have a better set of fixtures than anyone else.

We are still in the driving seat here but it needs the people in the stands to get right behind the fellas on the pitch to get out of this.

Alll this “we’re down”, “we’re doomed”, “I don’t trust this lot” talk has to stop. The media and the neutrals are taking enough joy from our situation. Our fans need to get right behind the fudging team and we’ll get out of it. And if we don’t, I’d rather see us going down swinging than sitting around feeling sorry for ourselves, pointing fingers and saying “I told you so”.

I, and I’m sure many others will happily sit and pretend we believe this lot have something about them, but that is what it will be - pretending.

A lot of us aren’t trying to just be doom mongers, we just genuinely feel these players don’t care regardless of how loud we sing in the stands. To me they haven’t shown any sign of giving a toss whatsoever where we are. If they were out there flying into tackles and scrapping for points then fine, but they aren’t. It’s three points dropped and off to the cushy training ground to ask your agent who’s shown interest for next season.

What I would say is I think if the club itself cared they could pack that ground out, cut ticket prices considering the mess we’re in. The reason people aren’t going is because we still have stupidly high ticket prices and the absolute dross were serving up isn’t worth the admission fee, train fare and cost of something to eat. Discount the ticket prices and fill the ground.

I think that’s where the likes of Forest and west ham have stole the march on us a bit, the anger in their fan bases for being in this position has already passed, they went through it in the autumn and Christmas time. Now they seem to be getting behind their teams.

Our fanbase is tinkled off for sliding into this position, we’re still in the anger stage and that doesn’t help the team at all.

Pretending is all we've got mate
Bluffing it.
The world is full of bluffers who have not been 'caught' yet; that's our best shot right now!

Don’t get me wrong mate, I absolutely agree with the not booing sentiment, I always have.

But these players need to remember what they’re paid to do and how much time and money this fan base puts in to seeing them. If these professional players can’t get themselves up for a scrap and a battle for points, what are they really ever going to achieve career wise? Far too many journeymen.

Give the crowd something to get behind and they will, the fans have proved it before.

I get it. This season has been the most miserable I've had supporting the club I think. 91/92 was pretty grim, 97/98 and maybe 03/04 were all brick (funnily enough, 93/94, I have some fond memories of) but this year has been pathetic and so much has gone on that has contributed to our plight that it's been stressful and exhausting.

But I don't believe the players don't care. Some may have poor attitudes but they are competitive animals and they have worked bloody hard to get where they are in the game. I can't imagine that any player wants to be part of a Tottenham Hotspur side that got relegated because that'll stick.

The board are a disgrace with how they've run the club this year particularly. They have been beyond shambolic and incompetent. But we are where we are. It's up to the players we have to get us out of the mess and the match-going crowd need to play their part by supporting the team during games. The rest of the fan base need to help by not feeding the beast that is the media/social media as much as possible.

Jeez....It's not the time to get all transactional about it.

I've written on here before....i love the club no different than a son or daughter. It's probably the longest relationship I have in my life beyond my mum. It's one constant that's threaded my life.

My daughter might annoy me or irritate me every now and then (she is a teenager lol) but when it comes to the serious stuff, moments of crisis, moments of upset....I'm bulletproof in supporting her, being there for her, unwavering in understanding and positiveness.

In tough times...she's not this, that or the other....she's my daughter. Ditto this club.

If she doesn't want you to boo at her, she needs to earn your respect. You've paid a lot of money to raise her.

I mean, completely different but sure.

The only point I’m making is, the fans have always been there supporting this team, yes there’s sometimes booing which I’ve said I’ve never agreed with. I just think these players should meet the fans half way, they will get all the support in the world if they show they actually care about getting somewhere. I really don’t think it’s transactional to believe the players should look like they actually give a toss considering people work hard to support them. Supporters not attending the stadium or not feeling like they want to is mostly due to a feeling of “if you can’t be arsed to try why should I pay money to come along and watch you half arse it”.

I still support the club, I just think players should understand they need to be seen to be making some effort. I don’t really get the odd daughter analogy, let’s face it none of us are fans of the club for all the glory it brings us at this point.

It's not completely different.
And loving something and supporting something unconditionally in bad moments is not 'odd'

And thanks for clarifying it's transactional.

So I love and support the club less than you because I think the players should actually look and play like they give a toss?
