Brennan Johnson

Because you think he's performing the best out of a bad lot does not make his performance good just better than the others. For me NONE of the wide players are good enough, none provide enough, create enough, help in possession enough or help progress the ball well etc but I've been saying this since last season. I said it this summer. I'll probably still be saying it next summer. 😅

In terms of costing us goals hmm yes I think he does. He averages around 30 touches a game, almost always the lowest of any of our players and sometimes even lower than subs that come on. So he's quite a passenger other than in those moments where he finishes chances. To some extent we are playing with 10 men when he's on the pitch due to his non involvement. That contributes to the times we lose the ball and can't regain control because we are playing with a numbers deficit especially if Son is on the other side also not really contributing. Son has a lot more touches but they aren't necessarily useful touches but he's at least somewhat involved in the game.
Jesus Christ Bishop I'm sure you'd find nothing but fault with GHod Almighty! :tearsofjoy:

I'm not disagreeing with what you, my point is that Johnson is the least of our problems for the time being in the forward line. I'm sure these desired all singing all dancing wingers that are young enough for our profile, score a load of goals, dribble past 5 players good defensively and are the next Salah are perfectly attainable for a club with our budget (!). But until we have a few of these magic forwards Johnson is the least disposable, without his goals I don't know where on earth we would be....

I'm a fan of Brennan but he surely missed a sitter in the second half today. My son reckons he aimed to shoot but mibrick it across goal - the way he put his head in his hands told me he knows he should have buried it. But c'est la vie. Good battling team performance, unlucky on the day.

He wasn't great today, could have been ill, but I think he changed his mind last second on that shot because someone was sliding into block the near post.
Unbelievable that neither his or reggies cross hit someone.

Don't want to see him near a starting 11 again. Offers absolutely nothing.
I don't think he's actually suited to be a right winger. He has some good attributes but I'm just not sure how you get the best out of him. You can't play someone right wing with zero 1v1 skills. It's a shame because he seems like a good kid but I just can't see us going forward with him when injuries die down and new signings arrive.

I find it odd that Son constantly gets tarred with the “he does nothing but score” brush in spite of his assists numbers year in year out and Johnson is the literal definition of he does nothing but score and yet some are really happy with him.

I think you could play him through the middle as he's a decent finisher (let's ignore today) and has the pace to get behind

He offers absolutely nothing defensively either. I like Johnson but he frustrates me with how exposed he leaves the full back at times.

He defends against his direct opponent (the opposition’s fullback) and nobody else. I think that is as per the coaching instruction from the manager

Do you not think that’s a tactical thing Ange asks for?
I think there will definitely be an element of Ange asking him to stay high and wide, but there are times where the ball is out near him on the wing, bouncing around and Spence and maybe Kulusevski are there charging around and fighting others for possession and Johnson is just there doing nothing, watching and waiting. It is frustrating watching him for 99% of the time (Other than his excellent movement and getting on the end of counter attacks etc)

For his sake, I hope he was still feeling effects from illness, because that was a really tame performance. There was one point midway through the 2nd half, where Djed advanced with the ball past Brennan. Then the pass got intercepted and Brennan was the closest to the ball. He did nothing and the break was on. Djed, who was 10 meters further up the pitch, blasted past Brennan after having cought up the 10m disadvantage in 15 meters.
Absolutely shocking lack of work!

There were also times when he went pressing the keeper and they just looped a simple pass bacl out to the LB who was always unmarked. I'm not saying that was his fault, but it was weird to watch it happen repeatedly, I wonder if Kulusevski or someone from midfield is supposed to go press the LB in those situations? It seemed like a waste of energy for Johnson to keep leaving the full back and chasing shadows

From what I saw at Forest I thought he would be great for us, he is just too passive too often to be a great RW for us. One for the bench longer term

He links up well with Kulu
It’s like chalk and cheese when we attack from our right and out left
I fully agree we ask Porro to do loads defensively but I do think that is the plan
