(Brennan) Johnson Again Olé Olé!

Seems we all agree that Johnson’s main attribute is getting between the posts and putting the ball in the net.

I find it baffling that other wingers find it so difficult. Werner, Odobert and even Son all guilty of ball watching from the corner of the box and not attacking the space. Luckily Son was capable of scoring all types of goals, the others not so much.

I would have thought it much easier to coach a good foootballer to make runs into certain positions than coach someone who knows where to run on how to be a good footballer (which largely relies on natural talent).

Guessing we will be signing the former and it’s Frank’s job to add the scoring part.
Maybe Ange knew he was not very good at everything else so just told him to be at the back post, the system worked for him perfectly. it's like when you were at school and you done all of the hard work and just laid it off for the brick kid to get the goal to make them feel good about themselves.

Other players in that position are expected to do a lot more with the ball where as Johnson isn't, hence why he was a tap in merchant.

Probably because he's a CF/RW hybrid rather than a purely out and out striker or winger. He's played games through the middle in the past for Wales and Forest.
Yeah, he does that very well, coming to the 2nd post and scoring on the counter. The rest of his game is average at best, he brings nothing while we are in possession. We beach and moan about our team not doing well, but when we sell a bench player we make him out to be a club legend.

You don't think it is weird that we have sold one of our first team squad (who came on in the previous game) on the first day of the transfer window without having a replacement in the door?

Kudus looks cooked to me (and if his lack of work rate isn't due to fatigue then it is even more worrying). We're now going into an important game against Sunderland preying he can get through another 90 minutes.

I find it very strange that we haven't kept Palace waiting just a little while for this signing, especially when the fee we are getting for the player isn't particularly high. It would've been useful to have Johnson as an option off the bench against both Brentford and Sunderland, especially considering the injuries and suspension that we have/had for those games.
That is a different discussion. You just look at any reason to knock the club.

Something that not one of the other 30 odd players used in the game managed to do.... He also played his part in our defensive performance that night (just as every player that started or was subbed on did).

Goals have always been the most celebrated things - because without them no game can ever be won.
Nice to see that you were paying attention that night.

Had a bit more of a think about this.

We’ve got 8 games in the next 29 days. I think we can all agree that’s a big load. We have one fit RM. I use fit quite loosely - MK looks a bit knackered to me and has lost the early season zip.

So, next off the rank to play some minutes there I assume will be RKM or Tel. Or what will happen most likely is Odobert will come across as he played right side a fair bit for Burnley and also plays there for France U21s. Although we did see RKM there for 15 mins the other day and Frank alluded to that as some kind of plan B in his post match interview.

It’s reasonable to say that if we hadn’t sold Johnson, he’d be playing a fair bit in the next month - so we’ve weakened our squad position without having a replacement sorted/ready.

Considering the injuries and current suspension I think our winger situation is now looking a bit of a joke.

We have one big money signing that looks poor if I’m honest and isn’t scoring any goals as we don’t play up the pitch and to his strengths. We have two under 21s bought for low-mid money, both want to play the same side and are nowhere near ready to influence Premier League matches. Both are learning in the job. And we have loanee who doesn’t rally look like he wants to be here - and is probably more of a forward.

The proof will be in the pudding but considering everyone was already crying out for an established buy on the left, we’ve made life difficult for ourself as we now need one on the right aswell. Thats £100m just to get to an acceptable position. Be amazed if that happens this month.

Maybe TF is planning on using Deki back on the right side more when he’s fit (to support MK) and sees XS and JM as sufficient amount of 10s (with Deki). Then we commit to a £60m signing in the left.

Would people be happy with:

Left
New signing
Odobert
Tel

Central
Deki
Maddison
Simons

Right
Kudus
Deki

That’s decent numbers considering it’s highly unlikely we will be in Europe next season. Although doesn’t really tally with the new strategy and money pump that’s been spoken about.

That's an interesting list. I don't know much about Schade but every other player there has so much more to their game than just the goals, they are an ever present threat. Johnson isn't.

He had a place in Ange's team as it seemed the only thing expected of him was to arrive at the far post, something he was very good at. His otherwise general anonymity no doubt contributed to our poor performances and lack of attacking threat last season.

Frank has obviously decided he needs more from his wide men and the Palace offer was too good to turn down as his value was only going to go down.

So good luck to Brennan, i hope the move works out for him. He seems like a nice chap.

This.

Gakpo is the closest in terms of output but only has a puny Premier League title to his name.

It was Eze messing us about, not Palace.

We always complain transfers don't get done early. I'll wait until the end of the window to pass judgement. Whatever Johnson is/was, it isn't the answer to our problems.
Sorry, I meant the post I made where you said that was a different discussion. This one....

Also a fine bit of Nostradamus'ing from me there re: Kudus! ;)

What you say might be sort of logical but I'm of the thought process that there is a list of Spurs players that should always get sold if the right interest and offer came in. What happens if we turn Palace down and they find a different solution? Then Johnson is a Spurs player for the next 18 months as we don't get offers. Then we can't improve ourselves.

People in football always talk about how complex football transfers are. I reckon when one comes along like this where all 3 parties agree, you just get on with it. That's the brave choice.

He rates Johnson, he thinks he should have stayed. He likely thinks that he should be starting games for us.

Then Palace didn't really want him in the first place (hint - they did).

We wouldn't be turning Palace down, we'd just be saying - yes we will sell him to you but do so in a week or so's time.

We're now about to go into a spell of important games with no right winger available at all.

Frank?

That can't be right. He picks that team and hasn't used him. Frank's honesty towards his player would be the reason Johnson decided to leave.

Rather than create conspiracies, can Spurs fans just give our club the benefit of the doubt that they are all pulling in the same direction. If that is what Frank has agreed with his DoF's, then that is incredibly healthy especially then getting the business done. To be fair, it's what most Spurs fans were saying anyway. They weren't singing Johnson's praises.

I think Johnson is a decent player that does something not many of our players do very well that is very important if you want to win football matches (scores goals). I think he should be rotated with Kudus (who was clearly getting more and more fatigued with his workrate dropping every game eventually leading to an injury). I'm absolutely fine with us selling Johnson, just not with us selling him despite having no viable cover/competition for Kudus.

I think we have perhaps already dropped points through having no viable right wing cover and we'll drop more points before we bring in a new right wing option. Those points could mean something at the end of the season (though I suppose difference between 8th and 16th doesn't mean much).
