(Brennan) Johnson Again Olé Olé!

I think he has been sold as he doesn’t fit ‘the horseshoe’. Because Frank only has his team progressing the ball forward in two ways (via long balls from the keeper or passes from the full back to the winger’s feet) the most important thing that he wants from his wingers is the ability to receive the ball, with their back to goal and under heavy pressure from the opposition’s full back. The winger also has to be able to beat an opponent one on one as we’re not going to use creative passes brought the lines to progress the ball into goal scoring areas.

The things that Johnson is good at (running in behind, finishing one on one and getting into great goal scoring positions when the ball is on the opposite flank) are not at all needed in a Frank team as ‘the horseshoe’ doesn’t create those sorts of chances.

I think the best sort of player for Frankball would be peak Wilf Zaha.

If you look at it objectively he's moved up, palace are in a better place than us atm.
A direct competitor has been improved and we've been weakened, if only until we get a replacement in.
It's a baffling situation.

He's gone to palace for 33 million or so, if he was a top player one of the bigger clubs would be snapping him up at that price

So what are they and us missing?

If we manage to get another player in this window of a higher standard it's not all that odd.

He is a good player for what he done but I agree here.

If the only metric was goals for his role, he would have had clubs queuing round the block.

Im massively thankful for his time here and his contribution, but he csn be improved on and given we signed Kudus to his side, thay improvement likely comes in another form of position improvement. Thats squads evolving

Bowen mentioned about is similar, I would have taken him at Spurs (no point now because you end up with Kudus v Bowen which is why he left WH the the other area I would have played him we have Xavi) but I have scores of West Ham fans who love him but say, if he isn't doing something he is doing nothing aka too many dead games and minutes on the pitch, thats why no one has flexed their financial power for him, it not some loyalty to WH, he is 29

Do you honestly think - goals apart - he is anywhere as good as the other six in the list? Even probably Schade?

For years, we harped and moaned (with good reason) against Levy because he always held onto players when they clearly needed to be moved on,... that he never understood the best time for moving an unwanted player on.

Well, Vini has done just that...

I assume that’s in reply to me as I used the word metric. But you’ll also note I didn’t use the word ‘only’.

As much as I like him as a player, I don't think he was ever right for Spurs.

As you've said, he thrives on being able to run into space behind - we've not been afforded that except against the top teams in a long time now.

He thrives on space, which we've been terrible at creating for players, despite having Bale and then Kane triple marked by the opposition.

That's an interesting list. I don't know much about Schade but every other player there has so much more to their game than just the goals, they are an ever present threat. Johnson isn't.

He had a place in Ange's team as it seemed the only thing expected of him was to arrive at the far post, something he was very good at. His otherwise general anonymity no doubt contributed to our poor performances and lack of attacking threat last season.

Frank has obviously decided he needs more from his wide men and the Palace offer was too good to turn down as his value was only going to go down.

So good luck to Brennan, i hope the move works out for him. He seems like a nice chap.

No not aimed at you specifically at all, if it was I would reply to you, loads have referenced goals as the indicator of excellence. As for use of the word "Only" thats not aimed at anyone, thats me making a statement.

I have come on, spied a space in the forum that isn't about Ange and Poch (rare as rocking horse sh1t) and added my view...........no more, no less

The career goals record is 69 in 265 so about 1 every 4 games. His first season for us he got 5 in 38 for us. In his promotion season he got 19 in 53 playing in the Championship, then returned 10 in 44 in his PL season for Forest.

It's a convenient narrative for some that he is an automatic scorer when given starts. In reality he is a player that is good for a goal, but can be left open for criticism when he doesn't find the net. We've all done that one to death to be fair.

I just wish him luck knowing that we've made a strong decision for a change.
