Bentley

I don't know, but I'd be surprised if Bentley was happy to not play football, get loaned out here and there, and just pick up his wage. Most footballers want be in the team and want to play football. and if they are driven by ego -- then even more so.

Bentley may not have helped his cause at certain points in his career, but I think he has acknowledged that. He has been unlucky in changes of manager, he did make a valuable contribution to the team when he played, and it wasn't his fault he came with big price tag and unrealistic expectations to live up to. I hope he manages to carve a successful career out at another club, if it is not going to be Spurs.

I can't remember the name of the poster, someone of mature years ;) who'd been on the board for an age, a mate of Crawley's too iirc, he gave Bentley the kiss of death when he raved about him and said he'd consign Lennon to history.

Apart from that goal he scored against arsenal and his contribution in the 9-1 slaughter of Wigan he will go down as yet another expensive signing who flattered to deceive
I never quite understood how a professional footballer was ever bought for so much money when he was unable to run at speed and had very little to offer

I remember when we signed him I used to post on COYS as well as here at the time. I started a thread titled the 'I don't want to sign David Bentley thread' as everyone on there was raving about him. A full 20+ pages of being told I didn't know what I was talking about (along with a small handful of others who agreed), shows what perception can really do.

I think it was CAS who said that. Bentley did have ability, however he was too slow to play on the wing. In my view he would have been best behind the striker in a free role where he could shoot and thread through passes.

Agree with billy.. WUM in action/keyboard warrior at its finest.

BORING

Checkout some of his posts towards me. Not that I'm looking for a shoulder to cry on. He doesnt like me commenting, because I rebutt him. If he posts something outrageous I'll comment, as is my right, just as it is your's. Seems you have selective morality, given that you saw fit to pay out on me. Still, I'm a big boy and I will cope .:)

My point was aimed at both of you.

That's it, CAS, I couldn't for the life of me remember his name.

David Bentley should have modelled his entire game on another more famous David who earned much more money than him and has just retired. Essentially they had exactly the same skill set (i.e very little aside from and excellent ability to strike and deliver a ball). The more famous David realised this early on, nuckled down, realised in order to make it as a footballer with nothing other than the ability to strike a ball he would need to get himself incredibly fit, play the ball early so he wasn't closed down and very very rarely try to beat a man.

The less famous David prefered to be seen as the cheeky chappy who dumped a bucket of water over Harry Redknapp on national television while wearing Y-fronts.

I will always hold a candle for him for the above incident and also his goal against Arsenal though. He seems a nice bloke too.

The funny thing about Bentley was that he seemed a very good player for Blackburn and just what we needed, ie someone who could cross a ball.

He decided to forget about that at Spurs and thought it'd be more productive to attempt stupid step overs and dumb back heels that never worked.

Then, when given the chance to produce a decent cross from a set piece, he decided it wise to knock it into the first defender, every fudging time.

Yeah. I think he tried too hard to justify his transfer fee.

It's the typical result of buying a player at the top of his form. He was sh*t for most of his career before that purple patch at Blackburn, he just slipped back to his career average form when he joined us.

Wenger does not often sell players that go on to be great, usually when he lets them go they have either wounddown their contracts or he knows they have lost their form or are not good enough. The guy is a **** but he can spot a player.

He may know when to release a player but not all of his purchases of late have worked out too well. He was right about Bentley though :(
