Mauricio Pochettino is poised to make his first signing at Tottenham Hotspur with the £10 million capture of Ben Davies, the Swansea City defender.

Pochettino, the Spurs head coach, believes he has defeated Liverpool in the chase for the Wales international and could complete a deal over the weekend.

Spurs agreed a fee for Davies with Swansea earlier this week but feared they would miss out on the left-back after Liverpool stepped up their interest with an £8 million bid, which was rejected by the Welsh club.

Liverpool would have offered Champions League football and were prepared to match Spurs's own bid after growing frustrated in their pursuit of Sevilla's Alberto Moreno.

But Spurs are now on the verge of signing the 21-year-old, after jumping ahead of Liverpool with an offer of regular first-team football, with Swansea ready to give Neil Taylor an opportunity to stake a claim as his replacement.

Davies was drafted in for the friendly against Chivas on Wednesday night in Milwaukee after Swansea captain Ashley Williams returned home when his partner went into labour.

Garry Monk, the Swansea manager, had intended to leave him out as an impending transfer appeared inevitable but it now seems certain Davies will be sold.

Swansea return from their tour of the United States on Sunday.

Don't know much about the lad, but very happy to see the club trying to strengthen in one of our weak positions. We always needed an upgrade on Rose.
 
I will be happy with this signing. Better than Rose and a home-grown for quota, whenever that kicks in! Double bubble.
Now go and get Konoplyanka and another CB if Dawson is leaving.

Wonder if we will see Swansea get Sigurdsson in the next week?
