Bale. Could we? Would we? Should we?

It can be slightly misleading though for the past couple of years as Bale has been fit to play for plenty of games but hasnt been picked. He fancies Isco ahead of him. Bale mentioned as much in interview on the pitch after the game....

Could be a bit of chicken and egg here though, perhaps the lack of games has allowed him to maintain fitness?

Injury details to add some context to number of games played whilst at Madrid.

Season / Injury / Games missed
17/18 Calf Problems 3
17/18 Pulled hamstring 3
17/18 Calf Injury 8
16/17 Calf Injury 8
16/17 Calf muscle strain 2
16/17 Ankle injury 17
16/17 Hip injury 2
15/16 Calf Muscle 8
15/16 Muscle Injury 4
15/16 Muscle Injury 3
14/15 Hamstring Injury 3
13/14 Muscular problems 1

If you add them back into the starts, the idea he has been completely left out of the team etc doesnt seem to add up that much.

17/18 20 Starts + 14 Injured = 34 games, out of a 38 game season...

Gareth Bale transfer: Tottenham could beat Manchester United to reunion with Real Madrid star willing to take pay cut

The 28-year-old will discuss his future this week and would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be struck to bring him back to north London.

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring developments with Gareth Bale and may yet launch an audacious bid to bring the star back to the club this summer, with the 28-year-old’s representatives set to meet with Real Madrid to sort his future out this week.

Bale followed his match-winning substitute appearance in the Champions League final with the announcement that he would have to consider his future if he would not be a starter in future, and his agent Jonathan Barnett is set to sit down with the Bernabeu hierarchy over the next few days.

His exit is by no means certain since Bale is a personal favourite of president Florentino Perez, even if manager Zinedine Zidane is not so warm to him, and the situation is further complicated by Cristiano Ronaldo’s future.

The Portuguese also cast doubt on whether he would stay at the club for next season, and the bottom line is that one of the two leaving would make it far easier for the other.

The link between Manchester United and Bale has long existed, with the player now said to see Old Trafford as a preferred destination.

They would also be better placed to match the forward’s current wages, but that is precisely why United are now cool on the player, especially at his age and at this point of his career as well as after signing Alexis Sanchez.

Sources close to Bale say he would also be very open to a return to Spurs, and would be willing to make compromises on financial demands if a deal could be structured.

With manager Mauricio Pochettino having urged the club to make statements in the market this summer, those close to the hierarchy say Tottenham would be willing to offer a deal similar to Harry Kane’s, of around £200,000 a week with bonuses.

Sources say that Spanish tax means Bale only gets £200,000 in hand at Real Madrid, but that other commercial deals related to being at the club take him up to way over £500,000.

So following Daniel dealing his first card yesterday, Gareth has wasted no time in responding.

Perez's turn next!

Not the type of injuries I suggest.

Muamba buggered him up early on after a promising start.
'Charlie Adam' was a constant injury he had.

Then he was out of favour until Benny's injury gave him a chance.

He played plenty of league games for us in those last two seasons.

I would suggest injury, including muscular ones (especially muscular ones?) has been a constant feature of his career, and that moving back to the PL will do little to change that.

Especially given his age, and the likelihood these things will slowly get worse all the same.

It's the hope that kills you. And there remains a gossamer-thin glimmer of hope.

I get the feeling that Bale will never be a true Real Madrid legend. He's definitely no CRonaldo, Zidane or Raul, which is fair enough, but is he even level with Marcelo, Ramos or Roberto Carlos. He's still loved at the Lane, and it wouldn't take much to put him right up there in the pantheon -- I mean, look how much we still revere Klinsmann and Ginola despite their limited stints.

Bale has done everything he realistically could in the game. He's arguably won two CL finals as well as the rest of his medals with Real. Okay, so he hasn't won that many Spanish league titles...but who cares when you're shining on the greatest club stage of all. In his spare time (!), he's taken Wales to a major competition and then to the SF. Glory all the way.

So what's left? I wonder if he plays Championship Manager (or equivalent). What do you do after you take Real or Barca to CL glory? You start again with a lesser team with whom you've got some sort of connection. Like Spurs. I sincerely hope that Bale is romantic enough to want that in preference to United or Emirates Marketing Project -- with his time left at the very top of the game, would he become a true legend in Manchester? I doubt it.

Damn. Now I'm worried that he might fancy a stint at Southampton instead. Or Cardiff...

Interesting. Delaney isn't the type to make transfer stories up.

But the £200k pre tax doesnt match with the £350k pre tax the guardian had him on https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/oct/30/gareth-bale-real-madrid-new-contract-2022

£200k would put him on £363k gross. All football wages in Britain are always reported as the gross tax figure.

Wow...did not expect to see this story continuing. My only hope is that if we are pursuing it, we don’t try for too long and end up missing out on someone that would have been more realistic while losing him to United.

Also loving United’s reasoning for not wanting him potentially. ‘We don’t want to sign ageing, 29 year old players at the tail end of their career on big wages...but also because we’ve just signed Alexis Sanchez’

£200k in-hand tallies pretty nicely with £350k pre-tax, so perhaps the Guardian just got that one wrong?

And when all is said and done, this is the number of league stars he has managed in his career:

17-18: 20
16-17: 16
15-16: 21
14-15: 30
13-14: 24
12-13: 33
11-12: 36
10-11: 28
09-10: 18
08-09: 12

Is a player this frequently out, worth investing so much in? Can we afford to put all our eggs in that basket?

Especially given his age, as good as he is we shouldnt expect those numbers to improve...

As i have said before his biggest asset was his pace and with all the pulled hamstrings and muscles injurys he has had over the last few years then he MUST have lost some of that pace. Bale ( imo) would NOT be worth the outlay ( in transfer fee, wages ) it would cost us to get him.

I would rather spend that money on player/s for the future not a player who ( imo) is one from the past.

The overhead kick has clouded a lot of people's judgement - if we were ever to spend that sort of money this summer I would prefer it to be on Sessengon, even if it meant him going back on loan to Fulham for the season.
