Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

What's the point of having 90mill if you're just gonna reinvest it in inferior players tho? We don't have anyone in our squad anywhere close to the level of modric bale or vdv

Bale and Modric both kicked up a fuss and wanted to go. What do you expect us to do keep players who's hearts are not in it and sell them for less a season later? Not very good business sense is it.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

So we need a billionaire to not sell our best players???

We need a billionaire if we intend to keep our best players and not be a one man team going nowhere. We could have kept Bale, he would have sulked a bit, but eventually gotten on with it. Would he reach the heights of last season: Maybe, maybe not. Our squad on the other hand would have been **** and any chance of top 6 would be gone IMO.

Suarez and Rooney seem to be having decent seasons?

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

Levy wants us in the CL, so any manager coming in will be asked to do the same: Overachieve.
Maybe so but we have been there about's for years now and perhaps unlucky or bottled crucial games in past seasons but still close. Under AVB we are going backwards the warning signs were there when bale was out last year or did not perform.

Levy hired him so his mistake he has achieved nothing in England and was a risk at the time and I thought it was a bad move.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

Seeing admittedly only highlights on MOTD what has happened to our closing down and our tackling??

So only Sandro can do that now??

But we're not going backwards, we're doing better than last season results wise. This round last season we lost 1-2 at Everton before going on a 12-game unbeaten run in the league. We're doing better in the cups. We've had three shockers in the league compared to two last season, but that's about it. Performances, style or whatever you want to call it is about the same.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

well with injuries and suspensions who knows maybe AVB will 'stumble' onto a system that works....

whoever is our manager needs to do the following.....

- ensure Naughton & Dawson are not first choice and look to move them on.

- appoint a captain that the players can look up to...a player that inspires, has a will to win, and can raise others games by his indidividual peformance.....I say Sandro

- get a passer next to Sandro in cm.......bring back Carrol and develop him if needs be

- play a support striker off the main cf......eriksen or Lamela preferably Eriksen

- try and give an attacking quartet a run of games so understanding can be gained..lennon eriksen....Townsend & soldado

- change the ethos in home games to starting strongly get an early goal or two and then play on the counter...

at present im still in shock and numb at today....just want my love for spurs back.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

Well there we are then. AVB has earned a fortune out of us and Chelsea.

We have great players. Not good players, great players. He has completely failed to get the best out of them.

Who can do better?

That is the question.

We have had our pants pulled down by anyone decent and a load of streaky wins against bottom sides arguably from a few dodgey pens and not beaten a side in the top 10.
We beat Fulham and Sunderland in between two maulings they are relegation fodder and it was not convincing either they both had good chances to peg us back and we had some good fortune. Comparisons with this time last year are void IMO

I don't know how or why you continue to trott this line out. How can you say we're doing better than last season when we're getting hammered by scores of 3-0, 5-0, 6-0 and don't look like scoring in at least half of the matches except against **** poor sides in Europe? The league is pretty average this year to be frank, Emirates Marketing Project look breathtaking at home but utterly useless away from home, Chelsea look like an average side despite an abudance of talent, United look bang average, Arsenal are top FFS and Liverpool are 2nd! That's Liverpool with the likes of Kolo Toure, Henderson and Flanagan in their side. The league is definitely weaker this season than it was last season. We can't even say we have a good defence anymore that's the funny part.

Is this is going forwards then I dread to think what will happen if we go backwards.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

WhhopWhoop, it's a vicous circle. No UCL means players leave, they want to see ambition from the club else they will move on. If we stay mediocre then no top player will look to come to us/stay with us.

Lets think about the money spent, with the mind that AVB had said he wanted to move to a 4231 with a high line, high intensity pressing with inverted wingers. To begin with, we had no inverted wingers at the club other than Bale. Lennon had shown he was an out and out winger, whilst Dempsey and Sigurdson had both been used on the other side as utility players. We had no creativity in the middle, no inventive passer, something we went all season without. We lacked a decent forward, Ade had been off form and had a bad attitude and Defoe hadn't shown much since Xmas. There was also a question over the fitness of Sandro after such a horrific knee injury.

Now to address all those positions to make a system that the Coach says will work would cost a great deal of money, money which we do not have. The sale of Bale allowed us to get the players needed to get AVBs system to work. We got an inverted winger for each flank and a revitalised Townsend to boot. We got Eriksen, a player who was getting many glowing reviews across Europe. We got a striker who has made a name playing as a lone finisher, with good movement. We got defensive midfield cover and a player who many south american experts were claiming was tailor made for the premier league, having also just turned in amazing performance in the Confederations Cup. We got a young gifted centre half who despite not being the finished article had UCL pedigree. You speak like the players are all cloggers from League One. They are far from it, the problem is they don't seem to understand the system. AVB for me missed out a massive piece of the puzzle and that is the Modric player. The guy who makes it all tick. He wanted Moutinho but we missed out and since then we have had to make do with central combinations that do not work. This is at the middle of our problems. Our midfield do not fit the roles in the system. AVB wants a hybrid of Holtby and Dembele, a player that can pass but also knows their defensive responsibilities.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

On MOTD they made the point that we have a shedload of foreign players to introduce to the Premier League. We didn't buy proven Premiership players, we tried to be canny and buy foreign. Were our expectations of integrating these players far too high? Or was today just down to having 3 centrebacks out injured?

culmination of both I would say.....

the worry is the lack of fight though....players dodging 50-50 tackles - not showing for the ball.....not even stringing 2 passes together......we looked little better than a pub team tonight in our organisation and effort.....and that is down to avb.....

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

You only have to look at the way AVB uses the squad to know where the problem lies.

We have two of the best wide players in the Premiership, neither is guaranteed a start, and when they do start they often play on the "wrong" side, and so are no longer wide players.

We have one of the most promising CBs I have seen at the club in decades in Vertonghen. He is played at LB - where he has said he doesn't like playing - because he can. While a defensive midfielder plays CB. And one of our best LBs plays for QPR.

We have a proven goal scorer in Soldado, who is small and slight in stature, and who has to play up front on his own, in one of the most physical leagues in the world.

We have three physically powerful defensively minded midfielders who are all in the team at the same time.

We don't have playmaker. We don't have proper number 10 (just a lot of players who can do a job there).

We sold Hudd who at least can both defend and attack, rather than one or the other, and see a pass. He didn't look so bad against Liverpool.

Re: ***The Official AVB Discussion Thread***

This high line with slow defenders nonsense has got to stop, no wonder Lloris makes mistakes the amount of times he's called upon every game, how we haven't conceded more goals I don't know. Even last season it was frightenining the number of times teams got behind us.

Didn't say we were going forward, but there's no major decline happening. We're about the same in most aspects. Whether that's good enough is another question, how much progress should we be expecting?

But it won't. Remember he employed at Chelsea. He employed it despite playing Gallas and Friedal TOGETHER. He has had plenty of opportunity to see it doesn't work but he keeps employing it. A bit like playing Naughton as a left back.
