Tottenham Hotspur are actively taking steps to try to combat the "unacceptable" behaviour of a supporters' group set up to improve the much-criticised atmosphere at White Hart Lane, according to documents seen by the Guardian.

The latest minutes of the Tottenham Safety and Advisory Group (SAG) reveal the club are concerned about an organisation of supporters who want to bring the noise back to the stadium on the back of André Villas-Boas's comments that it is too "anxious and negative".

The 1882 movement, set up by the Fighting **** fanzine and podcast, encourages supporters "to sing as loud and as long as our lungs will let us". However, the minutes reveal there are moves being made behind the scenes to try to prevent the people behind it gathering in a designated area of the ground.

Bob McIver, head of building control at Haringey council, has written to Darren Eales, the Spurs director of football administration, to put the club "on warning" about this group. According to the documents, the club have decided they will not be allowed to go into J block, as they did for the recent Capital One Cup tie against Hull City. McIver's view is that "this group have to be monitored at future fixtures" and, since that meeting, the relevant supporters have been moved to another area behind one of the goals.

Tottenham have been speaking to their Supporters' Trust about the problem with the atmosphere and the club say they want to work closely with 1882 group. McIver is "aware it is hard to stop this group getting seats together as they arrange this among themselves via social media".

Sue Tilling, Tottenham's safety officer, depicts the 1882 movement as "a group of supporters aged 15 to 25 who are trying to improve the atmosphere at White Hart Lane". The SAG is "fully aware this fixture [against Hull] came just after AVB's interview regarding the lack of atmosphere at the stadium". However, there were reports of people standing, against stewards' instructions, and they "will therefore not be allowed to buy seats in this area". The group "stood and migrated [and] this is not acceptable".

The 1882 group was set up in the 2011-12 season, originally for youth-team and under-21 fixtures. According to its website, "the aim of the 1882 movement is to support our team and the shirt they play in and to sing as loud and as long as our lungs will let us. We want to hark back to the days before the Premier League, when how loud you sang and how passionate you became wasn't dependent on how well Tottenham were playing. We simply want to make noise and get behind the team, which hopefully creates a more enjoyable match-day experience."

The SAG meeting took place on 5 November, including representatives from Metropolitan police, the ambulance and fire services and the Sports Ground Safety Authority. West Ham's supporters were identified as having caused the most issues at White Hart Lane this season because of "increased, organised problematic fans". Their followers were "not the best to deal with and had ignited a smoke bomb".

The Fighting **** @LoveTheShirt

There is no move by the club to disband 1882. They remain positive about it. We're looking forward to Anzhi.

It's probably an age thing but I find the 1882 group a bit like the prat at the party who thinks everyone should get up and dance to the "Birdie Song". I certainly won't ever boo my Spurs but I don't need them to show me how to support the team.

My understanding of 1882 is not that they want to show people how to support the team but to provide a like-minded group that can sing their hearts out. That's why they started with youth and reserve team games and have been working closely with the Club on first-team games. I started going to see Spurs in the late 70's and went to most home games in the early 80's and loved singing my heart out and losing my voice (especially after the 84 UEFA cup win).

Meanwhile Spurs have banned a section of their own young fans known as the '1882' group from Block J at White Hart Lane after they moved on to the stairs and did not comply with various instructions and warnings, resulting in the club receiving a warning from their local council. The club plans to re-site the fans behind the goal.

Re: 1882

Already been refuted by 1882 AND the club mate
Edit: sorry misread the post, why does it start off witj 'banned' but then later 're-site"

Cleverly worded - says "banned from block J" but sounds like banned to a skim reader. I suspect that's the impression they wanted to give.

Cleverly worded/poor grammar. If the sentence was constructed with commas - there would be no misreading.

*I'm not the grammar police, but surely people who are paid to write should do it correctly.

They used to have proof readers, but they've probably been let go to save money, which is just another way of saying increased profits for the owners.

I don't need them to show me how to support the team.
You may not but (imho) there are a lot of folk who go to the Lane who really really really need to be shown what support means.

I'm with you there! In the last 3/4 years our so called supporters have turned into a bunch of moaners with entitlement issues. Just as bad as Arsenal and Liverpool. In most games this season I feel like walking out as the negativity around me is awful.

I'm listening to the current Fighting **** podcast and they just said that the club talked to them about block J and safety issues and that they are moving to block 35. Both The Guardian and Telegraph are trying to generate hits for their websites to up their advertising money.

This smacks of the old press motto: 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good story'. What a surprise that the Gooner fanzine The Guardian is behind it. No doubt that numpty Adrian Durham will be all over this soon too.

I welcome 1882. When I go to games I dont make a lot of noise preferring to absorb the game but if everyone was like me there'd be no atmosphere. The songs as WHL have been unimaginative and lame for years and we must have one of the least self-depricating group of fans in the country. A bit of humour, innovation and fun is exactly what 1882 brings to the table.

Tickets for THFC vs Woolwich U21s are now on sale. £3 for members £5 non-members.
Fri 28th Mar. 7.00pm kick off.
1882 are in block 15 of the West lower, if/when that sells out we get block 16 etc.

Ring the ticket office - option 2 if you are interested & want to sing for the shirt for 2 hours.

Is the movement getting a block for the Benfica game ???

No mate. Due to the average age of the 1882 lot (me and a few others excepted LOL) they generally tend to stick to the cheaper matches.

I'm going in the block next to Benfica for the crack anyway.

At least they are trying to get an atmosphere back, I have enjoyed the 1882 movement at our games this season

Manchester United are going ahead with a permanent singing section in the stadium’s North East Quadrant to boost the atmosphere at Old Trafford next season.

The Reds have trialed the idea at two matches this season - against Real Sociedad in the Champions League last October and against Fulham in February.

A specialist noise acoustic firm was hired to monitor the atmosphere in the two games and compared them to the Liverpool home match last season.

Against Olympiacos the singing fans were located in the South West Quadrant and against Fulham it was trialed in the North East Quadrant and the results proved significant enough to make the latter section the permanent one.

Fans groups have driven the idea after years of complaints that Old Trafford’s once electric atmosphere had disappeared.

A fans’ forum and two surveys conducted with season ticket holders indicated the majority were in favour, with 83 per cent rating the trials a success.

However, 44 per cent of those who had to be moved from their normal seats were against the idea of the section being made permanent.

Nonetheless, the club have decided that the 1,600-seat North East Quadrant will house the singers from the start of the 2014-15 campaign in August.

Fans currently holding season tickets in that section have been sent a letter to inform them they will be moved.

Season ticket holders who took part in the trial will be given priority to move their seats to the singing section.

Smart move by United. I hope we do something similar with the 1882 movement - got nothing but respect and admiration for them. Would love to be part of them whenever I'm over myself. :)
