Roberto De Zerbi *OFFICIAL*

I can't speak for fan approved but for me any team that has all of Tel, Gallagher, Richy, Moore, Gray and Bergvall in the same starting lineup is a team destined to struggle. I know thats an unpopular opinion but these are average to low quality performers and thats more than half the starting 11! Play them in the 11 all season and we will 100% play Championship football next year.😅

I don't put the blame on the front 3 today at all even thoughI don't rate them, the blame is the fault of the midfield and De Zerbi mainly for picking that midfield. I'd go as far as to say that he was a little deluded if he thought that the midfield he selected was going to be up to par.
My take on those players is as follows:
Tel, has potential
Moore, not ready and needs another loan
Richarlison, time to go
Bergvall, potential
Gallagher, not remotely good enough

So put them all in the same team and you have relegation. Which we almost saw last season. It's why RDZ said he only had 11-12 players that were good enough going into the summer window. So I do think he made a massive mistake with the starting lineup yesterday but I think he actually knows the truth and a mixture of trying to nurse the injured guys back and having a bit too much faith in the squad led to yesterday.

The type of man he is i don't think he'll make that mistake again.

de zerbi left brighton and the epl mid of 2024 - its been two years since and a lot of teams are already playing the third man combos and consequentlly, many teams know how to deal with it.

i wonder how dezerbi is adapting to it. not just brentford but hull city showed man u that man marking and balls over the top can neutralize intricate football

I think with much better players his tactics will prevail.

Just had to check the 'Played' column in the table to make sure I hadn't skipped ahead a few months. This is almost all-time levels of meltdown in a manager's thread.
Not surprising is it? It's not like the performance we saw yesterday was a blip! Even if we had drawn or lost a tight game I think most fans would have seen it as a side taking time to gel. I'll speak for myself, I was looking for an indication of some change from the poor League form of last season. But let's be honest we were well beaten and lucky we didn't concede more goals.

It's slightly concerning that a manager most fans, including myself, rate, has worked in the PL before so knows it's intensity, didn't foresee that the line up he put out yesterday would perform that badly against a very physical Brentford team.

I'm sure it will get better because one thing we know about RDZ is he will not put up with that mediocrity. Roll on the Transfer window.

No it’s not surprising at all but that doesn’t make the reaction normal. It’s one game! But then given you and all of the other day after heroes could have picked a better team I guess he’s just clueless (unless we win next week, then he’ll be a genius)

Your sarcastic posting style does you no favours mate. It's fine to disagree but not be a righteous d1ck though.

The only thing that concerned me was... I get, and completely accept that the back end of last season was survival and he only layered in some real basic principles of his philosophy, not to complicate things etc. But there are some small bonuses from that period, getting to know the players, physically and mentally etc getting your coaching staff settled in etc.

What follows is a whole pre season, fragmented by players returning on different dates. BUT your still churning away teaching, feeding, laying out a more detailed approach.....so my concern is I didn't see, or could detect yesterday, 1% of what any of that may be?

There are some caveats and yes, it's early days.

Although, given RDZs own perplexed, bordering on disbelieving, expression on the bench ...he was thinking the same :)

You more or less said we lost because he picked the wrong team, no?

Not sure why you’d call me a dingdong though. Seems to a bit uncalled for.
I said more than that but yes. And I thought that as soon as the team sheets came out, because our team was physically weak compared to Brentford. Didn't post on here because I didn't want to appear negative before our first game.

Should we be concerned by yesterday's performance? Yes as it isn't isolated. Should we use it to question RDZ's ability to take us forward? No. Is RDZ a good coach? Of course. Will he make mistakes? Of course. Is it ok for his decisions to be criticized on a fans forum? Of course. Do I think I know more than him about football management? Of course not. All these things can be true at the same time.

There has been so much change at the club in the last 6 months. Anyone expecting us to look anything special against a settled and comfortable Brentford team on day one was likely just riding the optimism of a new season and nothing more.

There was no logic to suggest we’d go there and look like the team we want to be. We’ve had an extremely disrupted pre-season, more about avoiding injuries than anything. Combined with the World Cup, a whole lot of ins and outs, a manager who is effectively brand new (at least in terms of the style he wants to now bed in) and there’s still clearly a lot more work to do on the squad. I’d be surprised if we are in the top half before November/December, but after that I would expect us to start really picking up the points.

You even liked the post where I basically predicted what’s happening (let’s hope the transfers are to follow quickly)

3-1 loss (Janelt own goal) leading the meltdown in the fan base and a flurry of transfer activity next week.

As ever, our fan base has the collective temperament of a 5 year old so once again my biggest fears are that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and all the idiots with a YouTube following ensure we do the same thing to this manager that we usually do.

As you've pointed out it's one game. Doesn't mean fans are going to be anti RDZ after one game. But nonetheless it's in his gift to ensure that we perform better which will calm the concerns of fans. Starting with Charlton next week.

I'd agree with all that except Richarlison. We should be adding to his goals with a proper no.9, not swapping them for someone else.

Genuinely I think he knew it was going to be a tough night regardless.

Was it worse than it should have been? yes, but we are undercooked and unbalanced, we made that choice due to protecting players coming back and fact that City has dragged us on with the transfers.
