James Maddison

Hopefully “small problem” in RDZ’ world ,the same as “small problem” when TF was managing

Roberto De Zerbi has reported James Maddison has a 'small problem' and thus will not be risked on our pre-season tour.
Keen not to take any chances, especially considering the midfielder missed almost the entirety of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Madders will be rested as a precautionary measure for the rest of the tour.

The same applies to Mateus Fernandes, who, on Tuesday, Roberto reported had fatigue in his calf.

"James has a small problem," he confirmed in his press conference after our open training session in Sydney, "I don't want to take any risks, especially in this part of the season and especially for James because he suffered a long injury last season. He's an important player for us. The same for Mateus Fernandes. It is not the right moment to take risks. We will work again when we are back in London."

I think there is a theme here, RDZ probably realizes a huge part of Spurs problems over the last few years has been the injuries and starting the season with 6+ players injured. Add the fact of returning WC players, and quite a few of our players coming off long term injury, seems we are wrapping everyone senior in cotton wool, no chances with meaningless preseason games.

Actually think it's quite smart.

Tend to agree with that, i also believe he is a bit and out player. On his day he can be great but on others he fails to show. He was the same at Leicester and Norwich.

That's definitely true.

However, if we fill the left and right wide slots then Madds, Kulu and eventually Xavi would be sharing that number 10 slot. Would that increased competition for places get the best out of these guys? Would having way less pressure to be the talisman in the team help them relax and play well?

You'd like to think so right?

Maybe, however if that happens there will be at least one of those three wanting more game time.

We have discussed before, he seems to only a half a season player (can only hold form for that) vs. just a streaky, few games good, few bad. To me that indicates a physicality thing (or mental load).

With his age, it's not likely to get better but perhaps him being willing to accept more rotation (with Xavi coming back in 2nd half of season) could help.

Indeed, there is no doubt he has talent but for whatever reason he is very inconsistant. As i said he was the same at his previous clubs. As you say it has to be a mental thing because i do not think any of us do not believe he has talent.

You would think, or like to think, given we would, when fit, have 3 options there, that we could manage them all and get the peak out of all of them. That kind of future management of depth would not go a miss

With both Madders and Kulu returning from long-term injuries, not relying on either for a starting slot is good squad management as both will almost undoubtedly break down with injuries at several times during the season. We can ease them back in slowly as impact subs to reintegrate them into the team.

Maybe the fact he is no longer the most talented player at the club, and essentially undropable, will drive him to become more consistent?

We can live in hope i guess, however he is nearly 30 so i will not hold my breath.

To your earlier point, I don't think the season coming would be the season these players get restless if not in the side. Perhaps in the latter part of the season if their fitness and form warrant it I guess. Mostly though, they'll be happy to have a great platform to play again.

Such a shame we lost Xavi. Imagine a 4-2-3-1 with wide full-backs and all 3 of them in the same side. Mouthwatering.
