Sandro Tonali

With Kinsky (or Verbruggen etc.), van Hecke, Senesi, Maddison, Kudus etc. We should be SO much better with ball progression. Tonali is no great passer but he's solid at everything and starts ahead of Gallagher, Sarr and the rest.

Would still love a Wharton though

If people are expecting him to come be getting it off the defence and ping passes with range and control the tempo of the game then they're going to be disappointed
I would expect him to help form part of an effective upgraded midfield and that, whether he is paired with Bentancur or Gray, we suddenly look better in the centre of the pitch. The pinging passes with range may be put a little bit more in the hands of some defenders considering the strengths of Senesi and Van Hecke (if we get him)

Yep, it makes from back to front, via Tonali who is really a 6, really exciting

Which how the modern game is played. Centre backs having the most time on the ball and dictating play and midfielders being able to do some of everything.
If we were to play a 4-3-3 for example. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play LCM and Gallagher RCM with Bentancur inbetween. Both Tonali and Gallagher pressing high and being able to cover the ground, Tonali being far techically superior to Gallagher put perhaps less of a goal threat. Epecially with Kulu and Xavi being crocked and Maddison probably not going to be able to start/finish or play every game. Add Kudus back in and someone competent on the other side and we'll look a different team.
I'd still worry about controling the middle of the pitch, but that would look to do it with energy and winning back possession rather than dictating it with the ball.
Funnily enough the player he's most like is probably Declan Rice while relying less on physicality.

People are turning their noses up at Tonali as if we’re in a position to sign someone significantly better. It’s ridiculous.

No matter who we sign, there always seems to be a section of the fanbase ready to complain. People moan that we invest too heavily in youth and say we need more proven Premier League players. Then when we’re linked with experienced players, they’re suddenly “too old”. We sign someone like Robertson and that’s the criticism. Now we’re being linked with Tonali, who is comfortably one of the better midfielders in the Premier League, and people are moaning about that as well.

I’m genuinely not sure what some fans want. It feels like the club is fighting a losing battle in the transfer market because every target gets criticised regardless of who it is. If we sign young players, they’re too inexperienced. If we sign established players, they’re too old. If we sign top-level Premier League talent, they’re apparently not good enough.

At some point, people need to be realistic about the level of player we can attract and recognise a good signing when they see one.

Didn't think anybody was turning their noses up at him? I commented about his play style v our squad. Me saying it's not a great signing is not a reflection on my thoughts of his ability.

And he is one of the best players in his role in the league.

Having pass ready CBs and a CM who can pass upgrades one of our most ridiculous areas of last season, being able to move the ball 5 yards without a mistake (I only Jest a little there).

He is class

Yeah, its about balance. We have a tonne of runners in our squad, but no passers. Gallagher was the most pointless signing of all time with the midfielders we already have. That's why there's got to be some caution that our incoming CM this year is exactly the right (passer) we need. I think Tonali would offer enough of this, but I do understand the queries

He has looked a very smart player though when I have seen him, runs when needed, sits and hold shape when needed, pops the ball off and gets play moving. Hugely intelligent player on the pitch - Not so in the bookies hahha

That would be ideal. Still creates some interesting issues.

Maddison/Xavi/Kulu
Tonali/Bergvall/Gallagher
Gray/Bentancur

Would be our spread of Sarr and Paliniha go.

Gray and Bentancur are interesting. Gray doesn't really show passing range to dominate games and Bentancur has a good short game. Neither are Registas though.

So we'd still be lacking a player who can control the game either with passing or dribbling.

Guimarães is actually the player that would be perfect for us as a Dembele clone. He would enable us to not have to buy two players in midfield. Similarly a Vitinha type player would have the same effect.
I've quite liked the idea of replacing Palahina with Gomes who although not an absolute regista does have decent passing range and vision and is an excellent progressor with the ball at his feet. Add a Tonali to that mix and there is a little more passing depth overall I'd say, still probably not the quite the right balance if Tonali isn't quite the ball player we really need but this mix would look a lot more healthy and progressive (along with Senesi and maybe Van Hecke behind them).

Maddison/Xavi/Kulu
Tonali/Bergvall/Gallagher
Gomes/Bentancur/Gray
