“Knows the club” is meaningful for Mason. He doesn’t just know the players (although that’s obviously crucial), he also knows the systems and procedures that are used to get things done. If he wants to buy a piece of training kit urgently, he understands the levers that are used to get a purchase order signed immediately. This has value. Jurgen’s long-ago stints at Tottenham do not mean that he “knows the club” in this sense. I’m not really sure there’s any sense in which it’s meaningful.
What I say of Mason is true of Ange, and Wells, and Frank, of course. Just not of Klinsmann or of Redknapp.
