Transfer thread

Because it's only obvious in hindsight, and was he a player Ange wanted? Probably 10 players 2 years ago that were on the brink of breakthrough, where are they now?

We can afford 70M, if he was the right guy in summer, do it early, do it at the price asked or even more (United overpay for everyone but still manage to get players while with a brick manager and not in Europe, and yes, I get they are United).

Saudi Sportswashing Machine, City, Liverpool, Scum, Chelsea have all gone out for that 70M+-100M+ player in last couple of years, we seem stuck in the 60M range for our top players, we can't compete all the time but we badly need 1 or 2 of those, we can rely on the Xavi/Bergvall/Odobert/Gray signings with the hope they all come good
But it's not hindsight, he looked a good player, not an exceptional one 2 years ago. That's when you jump on those players. You don't wait for them to become widely recognised as great before you try and get them, by the time they are even recognised as £70m purchase they are already a little bit beyond our reach.

It's either we push the boat out with reportedly we weren't willing to do in the summer or we aggressively identify actual quality ready to breakthrough players and go for them and I'm not talking about a player like Tel who isn't that.

Remember I told you United are ambitious, they go for it. We never do.

From ESPN:

Tottenham are in the market for a new winger and have made contact over former Arsenal star Serge Gnabry, who is now at Bayern Munich, according to Bild. Spurs need a forward to replace Brennan Johnson, who joined Crystal Palace at the start of the window, and Mohammed Kudus, who is out until April through injury. The club are also tracking Al Ittihad winger Moussa Diaby, as reported by The Independent and are one of eight clubs considering a move for Raheem Sterling after the former Chelsea and Arsenal winger became a free agent, as reported by The Daily Mail.

The owners are really really committed (I can’t remember if it was 2 really’s or 3), but let Mbuemo and Cunha go to Utd when they had no European football and we had just beaten them to a major trophy and have Champions League football. And also went for Bowen’s understudy and not Bowen.

Maybe we need 4 or 5 really’s to get those better players.

And there was me naively thinking that when we sold Brennan Johnson that we had a plan to replace him 🤨

The problem is when they're £70-80m, they don't want the current THFC on their CV. They get choices for clubs with bigger brands, equivalent or higher salaries and a bigger chance of trophies. So it's not even about whether we can afford the £70m at that point.

You can easily relate this conversation to the England midfield group. In that group you have Rice, Rogers, Bellingham, Andersen, Wharton, Foden etc. It's a talented group but only Foden is a player that we definitely couldn't have got if we went aggressively in for him as he was City homegrown. All these other players have become powerhouses and perhaps we perhaps couldn't have got them when they weren't at the bigger clubs. We may have even gone in for them a year or two before their big moves but you never really hear about that. We end up with Madds and Gallagher, decent players but not at that next level of talent and consistency. We're now probably in a big fight for Wharton.

What I think is shifting is our willingness to invest and play the younger guys. Like Foden, I think Archie is well primed to to become an elite England footballer. He won't need to change clubs. We just need to give him the platform. Then perhaps the younger version of these players might see that Spurs is a club where they get a chance. Then in the future we might be able to really get the top shelf prime players. I don't think we can at the moment.

Hopefully soon the kids who grew up during our 2014-19 golden era will be some of those making these decisions, and might have more of an emotional connection to us on those tight calls than those from other periods.

"I can promise the Lewis family are super committed and there is no doubt the club is clear"

Having 40 million drop on your lap after CL qualification and yet still ending up with Souza and Gallagher isn't being "committed".

But I must admit ENIC is "clear" about their intentions, grift more money from the club, and manage a zero net spend at the end of a transfer window.

Some of the fans believe the ENIC have totally changed flimflam, but I for one haven't.

Yeah you're right. All the top players would be coming to Spurs in January if ENIC were willing to spend the money, it's that simple ....
