Pape Matar Sarr

Has Sarr started any games for Senegal at the AFCON?
Scroll down this page; he played for 81' vs Benin, otherwise he has been bored as fck. Presumably it was a bit of a dead rubber.

Think we have had a long line of young midfield players Mason, Carroll, Skipp and now it seems Sarr who are all decent but none with the personality (or perhaps vision and intelligence) to dominate a game (which is needed when most teams won't allow us to play on the break against them). Hopefully Gray can buck that trend.

the thing is we have to be ruthless with these second-stringers. i mean yeah davies, sarr and all them above are nice guys, but we really need guys who are challenging for starting positions if we want top 5 and winning trophies.

"just good enough" isn't good enough as the team is only as strong as its weakest links.

edit: easier said than done as we seem to spend a lot of money but on mid-level players or downgrades even. a pity that we are losing paratici - he's really much better than lange at getting players who can have immediate impact.

Also need better second stringers because in current football half or more of your first team is out all the time.

yeah that's it - the demands of the game has gone up another level with the recent changes in the internationals schedules

that said, it was obvious that it was coming so i have no sympathy for teams and coaches who say they've been caught out by more games. that's not to say that sometimes teams get very lop sided scheduling due to TV etc. However, these odd occasions are to be expected and, once again, can and should be planned for.

all that to say we need to be ruthlessly progressive and keep upgrading our weakest links to turn them into strengths. i blame level and his three-window no-transfer that not only exhausted the team, but also allowed on-pitch standards to degrade without challenge.

Agree; when we have quite a few injuries, I am OK* with us being knocked out the FA Cup and League Cup so we can focus on the Prem and Europe. Because if we go all the way to the semi-final of the domestic cups, it would adversely affect Prem and Europe.
However, if/when we don't have quite a few injuries, I will be way more keen for us to progress in all 4 competitions.
Hopefully next season we can get a clean sweep with no injuries in August and then genuinely rotate players so they are not playing 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 and everyone is kept involved.

I hope this rotation is something that the cold pragmatist from northern Europe can do, whereas a fiery Latino might throw his toys out and demand his best 11 every week, rather than looking 4 or 5 months ahead. /racist

I don’t think he has been used to his strength. He could quite easily be a very good player if played in the Yaya Toure role.
Define what this role is, please? Yaya was a super talented guy. Played DM* at Barca but they preferred Busquets so he was sold to City. I was confused when Barca sold such a talent.
*And CB in a CL final.
Interesting reading that he would have signed for the Gooners if work permits were easy, but went to Ukraine then Greece!

For me Sarr is box to box a bit like Capoue or Onana, a level below Vieira.
