Thomas Frank - Head Coach

I think we actually have too many players when I go through the numbers but that seems daft after what we saw last season

This for me is a really interesting comment. Lots of us were saying that the squad was at a very healthy level and then we went and added 3 more in January. I never really bought into the Ange commentary about his lack of squad depth, especially seeing how other managers were achieving more with less. However, I can also see how it actually felt from the inside for him with so many injuries and the turbulence that brings. What was clear was that Ange needed a large squad due to the way he chose to play the game. It's another open question for me with Frank who is perhaps used to smaller squads.

I'm still ecstatic about the risk and reward though. If we hadn't had won the EL, we would be facing a set of PL fixtures plus 2 domestic cups. Last time around that meant 41 games. If we have got a fully stacked squad then it what we deserve for winning the EL. I think the core of our squad has appreciated in value, so if we have to churn a few it will be easier than the last few years,

I'm intrigued by the idea of Johnson being used in a more functional manner. I might even appreciate his qualities more if he's played in a role that actually suits his abilities. I'd still argue for at the minimum another option for the right as just having Johnson is a lot of hope without any real basis for an improved fitment or any real competition for a starting berth.

I can see why people would feel negativity towards Johnson. I actually enjoyed his goalscoring and felt he deserved more assists than he got. He often put a killer ball in only for no conversion. For me, the Johnson I saw in the EL final is the one I want next season. The one that is pivoting over to the left back area in the 18 yard box and killing a clear opposition chance. That guy left everything out there for the club.

Mostly though it's tactical for Johnson under Frank. I hadn't realised Frank wanted him at Brentford. That sends good signals.

If it even gets done this week, that's pretty quick. Relatively speaking.
Also, I think Justin Cochrane would have been away with England as part of the coaching team so that would inject an unavoidable delay to the process
That guy is favourite to replace Frank at Brentford so we might struggle to get him

Interesting looking at some of the coverage of Frank's player usage (he's very much, I play a certain way, but need to tie that into the players I have, approach).

His "wingers" don't have great take on numbers, i.e. not huge dribblers in the traditional sense. A big part of it is speed/direct nature, so they will get a ball into open space in front of them (something way more suited to Johnson and Son). He also allows the FB to go inside/outside of winger, with the inside player allowed to drive to box. He also gets player in at far post (more than one), I could see Johnson/Deki "wide" with Porro being an interesting play.

Either way, story is he wanted Johnson and Gray before, so probably has an idea.

If we only signed Semenya, Mboua and Eze and no one else, in this window, and kept the current main Midfielders and Defenders, I wouldn't be disappointed at all.
I think we can get away with what we have in those areas, with some better coaching and system tweaks. It's in attack where I think we are falling behind the top teams.
We've had Kane and Son (+ others) for a generation, in football terms, we haven't really needed too much there.
Now we desperately to upgrade in attack.

That is the sole reason clubs exist
It’s never been a business

They are connected, there are two football models

- Sportswashing/Vanity Project, commercials don't matter, just throw money at it, lie/cheat/creative accounts your way around restrictions
- Increase profile of club, get into more lucrative competitions (CL), get more sponsors to supplement any (reasonable) owner investment that can be applied.
- Maybe third, clubs that are just run badly, utter chaos ..

Spurs logic over the years as a business has been exactly the 2nd point, build revenue streams via stadium and both football and non football events to be able to increase on pitch investments that should (no guarantees) improve the ability of the club to deliver on pitch success.

The better you do that as a business, potentially the better you could/should be on the pitch, that's not a bad thing.

Winning trophies is what clubs exist for
I thought it was to play the Tottenham way whatever that is anymore or the West Ham way which has got them relegated a lot of the times etc … I can’t stand it when our own fans complain about playing attractive football even if we lose … what kind of loser brick is that to say?

To you and probably the vast majority of fans, maybe. But for me there 's way much more to the game than that. Such as appreciating some of the dazzling skills on display. Eg Micky Van De Ven acrobatically clearing off the line. Romero reducing Harry Maguire to a quivering wreck.Moments like that can also be treasured regardless of the outcome.

Of course if we do happen to win a trophy along the way then brilliant, but essentially I see that as just an added bonus, because most of the time the result is something of a lottery. Besides, the top trophies nowadays are essentially bought either by cheating oil-rich states, treacherous oligarchs or billionaire business conglomerates.

That’s part of the journey, the ride
Each game matters

Pretty impressive. Although you've got to consider that Brentford got 21pts out of a possible 36, whereas Emirates Marketing Project got 21 out of 30.

Bit less impressive if you work out the points per game:

Emirates Marketing Project 2.10
Arsenal 1.90
Brentford 1.75
ManU 1.70
Brighton 1.67
Saudi Sportswashing Machine 1.33

Still not bad though.
I'd bite your arm off if we average 1.75 pts against the top 6.
