It's so ridiculously overplayed, I forget what a tune Smells Like Teen Spirit is.

If we're looking for a best album of the 90s that in some way sums up the 90s it's this or Definitely Maybe.

Two of my favourite ever albums. I will give it to Jilted Generation, because for me, the 90's was the peak of dance/electronic music (as well as hip-hop). "Guitar" music (rock/metal/indie/whatever) was arguably done better in previous decades. IMO, MFTJG is the best work of the biggest and one of the best dance music artists of the 90s.

I'm gonna vote for MFTJG even though I probably like Nevermind a bit more. In my twisted mind, that makes sense...

Teen Spirit has to be up there with the best opening tracks on any album too. It's a real statement of intent.

Of the two, I think that Nevermind is the better album. Definitely Maybe has some great tracks but lets be honest, there is a lot of filler too. If they hadn't tinkled away great tracks on b-sides, they might've walked this.

Anyway, of the two, Nirvana get my vote. It is not an album that I feel the need to listen to often, I am not that keen on looking back, but I am always happy when I get to hear it. When it comes to decade defining albums, this has to be up there.

I've also got a thing for songs you can recognise from that first chord/note/whatever starts it.

Albums should start that way, Leave Them All Behind, I Wanna Be Adored*, Nine Acre Court*, Bone Machine, Only Shallow, Is it Really so Strange? All instantly recognisable starts to excellent albums.

Oh, and a cross between Definitely Maybe and the Masterplan would have gone down as one of the best albums of all time IMO.

* Yes, I know these ones have "noise" at the start, but the first strum/beat has the effect.

I like that too. I'd add to that list, the greatest intro of all time because it also kicks off its titular album. Hard Days Night.

I'll stick with what I said about MftJG last round, some great tracks on it, wonderful tracks that I'll never tire of, but it's up against a better album

I really need to sit down and listen to Nevermind fully again. It's been a long, long time since I have done (probably 20 years or so).

No!!!!!

But Nevermind wins this round for me...

IMO It's probably the most depressing album in history!

I just can't stand Nirvana. It's slow, boring, over-hyped and they never would have got so much attention if not for the drug addicts suicide. Add to that his voice is awful and annoying. It's Prodigy all the way for me.

They got loads of attention before Cobain's suicide, so that clearly isn't the reason for their success.

If you think that they are slow, I assume that you've never listened to Territorial tinklings.

In general Milo. In general.

What changed? Imo the whole Seattle grunge scene was massively over-hyped. It was something a little different at the time, but honestly I don't think any of them were any good. It was a wave that caught wind at the time for some unknown reason.

You're talking out of your arse, but hey it's your opinion.

Rock music changed very quickly from hair metal to grunge being predominant. It changed the audience and it changed what was being sung about. There was also a generational shift. All of this happened in a few months and I think that it was the last time that we saw a big change like that.

I don't think anything changed, apart from that a bunch of kids that had a desperate need to look like heroin addicts, finally got a band they could relate to.

Frankly, that's nonsense. It isn't often when you see an audience for a style of music change overnight. When it happens, it is pretty special. We can argue over the quality of the music all we like, and like all scenes, it had its turkeys but it seems churlish to not recognise the impact that Nirvana breaking through had.
