Referee supposedly quartered and beheaded after stabbing

SAO PAULO (AP) -- Police say enraged spectators invaded a football field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body after he stabbed a player to death.

The Public Safety Department of the state of Maranhao says in a statement that it all started when referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from a game last weekend. The two got into a fist fight, then Silva took out a knife and stabbed Abreu, who died on his way to the hospital.

The statement issued this week says Abreu's friends and relatives immediately "rushed into the field, stoned the referee to death and quartered his body."

Local news media say the spectators also decapitated Silva and stuck his head on a stake in the middle of the field.

Police have arrested one suspect.

Don't know what's crazier the ref stabbing the player or the fans beheading him, quaetring him and sticking his head on a pole in the middle of the pitch! I just hope he was sure it was a red card and not the wrong descion!

it was murder in front of the fans. no surer way to start a riot.

I've played in leagues where it really is brick to be a ref. The best ref I've ever seen on the Sunday footie/Hackney Marshes circuit was Washington Campbell - yep the elder brother of a certain ex-Spurs player. I think his other brother refereed too.

Btw, the original story is truly shocking!
To think that this year we have had random deaths reported in Holland and now Brazil.

Wondering if it's just that with Twitter etc it gets reported. At least I hope so otherwise society has truly gone to Battersea

LOL! I asked because I wondered if either of the Campbell's reffed any of my Sunday league my games. I played on the marshes between 2001 and 2005
