Livorno Player Dies

Ex-Italy under-21 footballer Piermario Morosini has collapsed on the pitch and has had a suspected heart attack.

The midfielder was playing for Livorno in the Serie B match at Pescara when he fell to the ground in the 31st minute.

A defibrillator was used on the pitch and Morosini, 25, was taken to hospital. The game was called off with other players in tears.

Last month Bolton's Fabrice Muamba was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after collapsing in an FA Cup tie.

The 24-year-old is now making "strong and steady improvements".

Morosini is on loan to Livorno from the Serie A club Udinese.

He collapsed face down and appeared to be in convulsion. The referee's assistant drew the referee's attention and he stopped the game.

The Ansa news agency said Morosini had suffered a heart attack in the ambulance.

He has been taken to Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital.

Apparently he has died. Terrible news again. Happening far too often.
 
sad news and i just seen it on youtube. morbid i know. Its horrible,

I dont think its happening too often though - I mean there are thousands of footballers about and three or four isolated incidents. I guess same ratio as in "real" life.

I saw the game got abandoned but thought as it was Italy, might of been crowd trouble or something like that. Such sad sad scenes to see that another player has collapsed and now apparently died. Condolences to his family.

True, but it's just amazing that people in their peak can suffer heart attacks. Apparently players in Italy do undergo regular checks.

I dont think the risk of it happening will ever be eliminated. You could try to mitigate it by undergoing regular checks etc but you cant remove that risk.

I think what these players have are defects which are born with rather than the stresses and strains of sport
 
If you look up the stats for how often his happens (sudden death amongst the young, often through cardiac arrest) you will be SHOCKED how common it is. As in, several times a week around Europe alone.
 
Beyond ensuring that players are checked regularly and those with heart conditions are closely monitored, I doubt much more can be done. Every death is a death too many, but sometimes we can't legislate for it, even after the best efforts are put into ensuring it doesn't happen.

It's a shame and it just adds more misery to the family as both his parents died when he was younger and his disabled brother committed suicide to.
 
It's tragic, although the cynic in me is beginning to think with him and Muamba in such close proximity that maybe there could be something else at play.

I dont think there is anything in it. This happens in everyday walk of life even whilst doing there day jobs. BUT because it happens on a football pitch we think that something is up or something can be done.

I guess it just happens. You can have a 90 yr old 50 stone smoker who is living happily whilst a 20 yr old athlete non smoker who has exercised all his life just die.

Its more than exercise and how you live - its genetics and all the other stuff.

Let's put it this way, it's not uncommon for body builders to just keel over and die. If there is sometime of new steroid that has been so far untraceable etc. I'm not saying it is the case, but it's just amazing that two players from two of the three best leagues in Europe have had tragic heart complications in the space of a few weeks. It could be scaringly tragic co-incidence (like the weekend Senna died, no deaths in F1 for years and then two in one weekend and none since), and I really feel for this guys family and friends.
 
For me the coincidence is more about why it seems to happen to sub-Saharn African players more (at least reportedly).

If there was a new steroid drug etc, i'd suspect we'd see more cases. This one probably sticks out more due to the Muamba case and the media coverage.

You're probably right and it is just tragic coincidence.

You raise a good point. Are sudden heart attacks among footballers happening more often, or are we just hearing more about it? Compare footballers to marathon and half-marathon runners. I bet 50 or more runners in the US alone did every year.
 
Overworked heart? Lets face it they maybe fit but they do a hell of alot or fitness work every day and the heart rate is constantly high. That cannot be good for the heart surely?
 
Very sad.

Must point out that saw this on youtube and it seemed to take an age until the paramedics were on the scene. His team mate was trying to get attention but the game carried on for a short while. In Muambas case he was seen by the medics the minute he collapased. Those vital minutes were crucial.
