It's the PREMIER LEAGUE

You may have heard this on talksports Sports Bar too but people using the phrase PREMIERSHIP when referring to The Premier League has become one of my biggest irrational annoyances.....

It hasn't been called the Premiership for 10 years and is as an out of date phrase as calling it Division 1. The premiership is what Scottish clubs compete for or is a Rugby competition!

Whilst I'm on my soapbox I cannot stand these all light or all dark World Cup kits....Germany play in black shorts, Brazil in blue shorts and France in white. This is a FIFA directive to make it easier for the officials to pick up on infringements. Whilst i think the standard of refereeing in the World Cup has generally been excellent I really hope this rule won't catch on domestically.

Rant over...

Just to play devil's advocate, the comparison with calling the league Division 1 is not valid.

If we ask how many Premier League titles United have won, the answer is 13, not 5. The Premier League is considered to include the years when Premiership was in the official name. You could argue that PL is inclusive of the Premiership years and the latter only includes 1993 to 2007, but how would you answer the question how many premiership titles have United won? 13 or 8?

So it seems to me they are alternative names for the same thing and neither are the official name. If we insist on being accurate the sponsors name should be included. For someone who insists on using League Cup, the latter is not an option.

I think the English Premiership League is the best league in the world

What's wrong with Division 1, 2, 3, etc, I say. It's like rebranding the metric table. Never liked how they tried to restart English football history.

That said, I don't lose much sleep over this.

Well, to be fair, it does read as "Barclays Premier League" pretty much everywhere - even the official website for the league. Nowhere, that I've found, on that website does it read "ENGLISH FA PREMIERSHIP LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY sponsored by BARCLAYS "

Given that, could you really blame someone for assuming it's the BPL?

I'm not blaming anyone, I just don't like referring to competitions by their sponsor

Wasn't there something about managers being requested to call it the Barclays Premier League in official interviews?
