Football Managers and "The 3 right backs" syndrome

glorygloryeze

Jack Jull
I though i'd start up a new thread to discuss discretely the issue of managers and agents seemingly making purchases for "goodwill reasons."

You remember Redknapp making purchases seemingly insisting he "needed 3 right-backs2 as a neccesity.
Then we've seen whispers about how Tony Pulis makes purchases and how he left Palace a few days before the start of the 2014/15 season possibly due to throwing his toys out his pram and not able to have free reign to make his usual "goodwill reasons" purchases (he spent a load at Stoke and often on players that he hardly played, hence why they parted ways). Then you remember the Secret Footballer article that hinted at the fact that Peace at West Brom was reluctant to sell Berahino because he didn't want Pulis spending the money the way he usually does..
I must say Allardyce makes me wonder in these terms as well...

So who else can be put on the list in your opinion?
Bruce?
Pardew (i know he's generally a dunce in terms of progressive tactics, but how many strikers does he have at Crystal Palace??)
You have to maybe add Mourinho **cough**Mendes**cough** to the list as well...

I wonder if, strangely, this phenomenon is something that can indirectly act as an equaliser in terms of leauge competitiveness (i.e. the clubs at the top of the food chain get duped - and there are so many players that can be stockpiled, Chelski's loan "system" notwithstanding...)

I think we need to make clear that this discussion is undertaken with the caveat that all of this is just speculation, not intended to defame anyone, commit libel or allege that anyone has acted in an illegal manner (sporting or otherwise). All of my posts on this topic are speculative and don't intend to defame anyone, commit libel or allege that anyone has acted in an illegal manner (sporting or otherwise).

I do think however, that there are a few managers that fall into this bracket and there's been a few players who have been bought for non-sporting reasons under select managers. I also think there's a pattern within the premier league of chairmen or managers selling or buying from each other where links can be found.
The Stevens Report in 2006 actually looked into, this but, wasn't done iirc with the cooperation of the FA.

Interesting to note that in the aftermath, Sullivan, Gold and Brady were all arrested...

Can you post any links, especially re Gold and co?

Was Mendes Bebe's agent??

He had only just poached him off another agent when the deal went through. Mendes got a third of the transfer fee. It was investigated by a Portuguese anti-corruption unit, not sure what happened in the end. Probably nothing.

More on Mendes:

When Monaco and Valencia met, Mendes had 16 of his players on the pitch. That clam Joorabchian is the same, enginering players' careers, getting cuts everywhere.

Thanks...i'd love to compile a list of transfers by agent/agency by certain managers. Are there any good sites that will show which agent/agency each professional footballer is with?

Oddly, I can't find any links on Gold's arrest, although I'm certain he was arrested at the time. Sullivan and Brady on the other hand...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6755991.stm - the transfers queried

On Brady and Sullivan

and their release

It's important to know that they were never cleared of wrongdoing, their bail expired rather than they were found innocent (not that, that means they're guilty of course)

I'll contribute a lot more in the coming weeks to this conversation, I've got a lot of thesis stuff on at the moment so, I'll be able sink my teeth into this a bit more when it's submitted.

Thanks; a lot of info to look over with 'fresh' eyes...

Ah Wilkie Mckay, the man behind one if not the most infamous transfers in British football.
I remember the day as if it was yesterday, hilarious stuff.

Sorry, but exactly which one was that? (I know it's not rSol but i still can't quite work out which one...)

And that of course is WRONG you stupid Scottish oaf, I'm getting Mckay mixed up with mcmurdo.

I'll hang about here for while for scara to taunt and ridicule me:oops:

Is it just me that opened that link and immediately thought Souness had blacked up for the photos?
I never actually opened the link, I just googled it and posted the first respected source. That's an hilarious pic, but something must be up, a green suit , at ibrox, he wouldn't have got out alive!!!And with a purple tie.
