Hungary’s scenarios

Hungary
– yes, Hungary – leads Group F. It is virtually assured a place in the knockout round. Unfortunately, its next match is against Portugal, a team that badly needs a win to advance. If Hungary beats Portugal, it wins Group F. It Hungary ties Portugal, it will probably win the group depending on the score of the Iceland-Austria game. Even if Hungary loses to Portugal, it will finish second in the group as long as Austria wins or ties against Iceland. The worst case for Hungary is if it loses while Iceland wins – but Hungary would probably advance as a third-place team even if that happened.

Iceland’s scenarios

Iceland
enters its final match, against last-place Austria on Wednesday, in a position to finish in first, second, third or even fourth place in Group F. Scenarios like this one are the reason we created our detailed matrix, so be sure to explore it. Bottom line: Iceland needs a win to be confident of advancing to the Round of 16.

Portugal’s scenarios

Portugal
enters its final match after a frustrating draw with Austria. Like Iceland, it can finish Group F in any position – first, second, third or even last place – depending on the results of Wednesday’s matches. Only a win is enough to guarantee an automatic place in the Round of 16.

Austria’s scenarios

Austria
is down, but not out. It must beat Iceland on Wednesday. If it does, it will almost certainly advance. If it does not, it almost certainly will not. If Austria wins, it will finish in second or third place. Just to be safe, Austrians should root against Portugal.

So the only way we'll play Portugal, is if Portugal and Iceland match each other's results, and even then it will come down to goal difference/goals scored.

After looking at this I now have a yearning for the 1980s computer games of my youth.

Northern Ireland (C) will play either Wales or France.

Slovakia (B) will play either Croatia or Germany.

Italy, Spain, Germany, England and France all in the same half of the draw
Bwahaha, we are going out big style. No way England can beat those teams in a row without ever failing or going to pens! Well done Croatia, you were brilliant tonight

definitely the strongest team in that half of the draw (especially if modric will play).

Are they much stronger than Belgium? I do feel like if Belgium click they can go on a run. I think Belgium can guarantee themselves second in group E with a draw or better against Sweden tomorrow.

They'd face the winner of group F, so Portugal, Hungary, Iceland?
