Elon Musk buys twitter

He's turning it into porn hub?

They're all moaning and saying how terrible it is, yet they're all still posting.
Don’t like it, don't agree with it, think he's a knob, then get off the platform.
But they can't because they are all addicted to it.

Lots have left. Some think it is too important to hand over another social media platform to right-wingnuts, and I tend to agree with this perspective. They already control too much of the media landscape. Whether you like Twitter or not it has an outsized influence in the public discourse and that will be hard to replicate elsewhere.

If all the normal people leave it just becomes a ring wing echo chamber, a forum for idiots who won't change their minds regardless of what happens.
It withers away to irrelevance.
I'm not on it, never have been, never will be, so maybe not fair to say this, but from what i do see it will do the world no harm at all for it to close down completely.

Its a very valuable journalism tool, a recent News Agent podcast explained it quite well.

Yes it had problems, and there is a lot of junk, but Twitter dying would be a loss to the world, there isn't anything else like it that people will move to en masse.

You are correct that if enough leave it will wither and maybe die, as reactionaries need someone to own as part of raison d'etre. That's why sites like Parlour or Truth social don't really satisfy that need for them. But why should 'normal' people leave though? Why cede Twitter to them as well? Say there is an exodus to Mastadon (which is happening already actually) then the fudges will pile on over there soon enough.

We should push against this in whatever way we can. Having another egomaniac techno messiah controlling an influential communications hub like this is not good in any way.

I've been calling out musk as a loon for as long as I can remember. Often felt like I was alone on that one, so you will get no argument from me on that score.

Does it really matter where the conversation happens as long as it happens?
No real experience of social media, always avoided twitter, fb and all the others so i could be wrong but it seems to me that they suffer from the same problems that every platform for public discussion has always suffered from, eventually idiots come along, drag the discussion into infantile arguments and we all go round and round in circles.
People fade away until a new arena is found, some progress is made, then the idiots turn up and we go through the process again.
Maybe twitter has had its day, maybe its time to move on, begin the next cycle.

Yes, it does matter that one of the most influential social media sites on the planet is controlled by an emotionally stunted man baby. I don't post on it myself, nor facebook or any of the others. I only post my thoughts on this one weird football forum full of mostly dimwits.

Twitter is deeply flawed but is also widely regarded as the best of a bad bunch. And yeah it might die off and something else might rise but now is not the time to bail on it if it can be saved IMO. Authoritarianism is on the rise and we need every tool at our disposal. So this time I agree with those that do not want to leave without a fight.
