David Beckham just wants his knighthood

In all honesty, not a big fan of his but he probably deserves one given the way he has been a top ambassador for this country.

Not sure if he'll get one now though. No matter how much you may or may not deserve a knighthood, it's not a divine right to expect one and even though he clearly never meant for the emails to be leaked into the public domain, I kind of expected more from him.

Old Golden balls hates being out of the limelight. I bet when he goes to bed at night he holds his own hand.

Na not for me, I have nothing against the bloke but I don't think he deserves a knighthood.

Whilst he has achieved a lot, you're right he hasn't done enough of note to achieve the status (I spit as I say that, it feels like such an elitist pat on the back in a lot of cases).

How do you feel about Murray getting a knighthood? Obviously he has achieved wonderful things for British tennis at the highest level but feels almost too soon?

Murray is kind of weird. His achievement as a male British tennis player winning Wimbledon was precedented in nearly everyone's lifetime. A holy grail of British sport. Likewise the Davis cup. And some Olympic golds and another Wimbledon. These achievements certainly deserved some form of gong, but he had all the lower ones quite early on. In hindsight they could have delayed the awards until he had achieved more but if he had been a one event wonder he could have missed out.

The knighthood really should be for something other than being good at the day job, which formally it is, but in practice it is not. Civil servants and politicians are far worse culprits here.

Beckham was a very good player, who worked hard and probably achieved all that he could with his talents (unlike say Rooney). He was also unusual for an English player in that he played abroad so his achievements had an international flavour. I suppose his contribution to getting the Olympics could be considered his "services to sport" contribution, so I wouldn't have minded if he had got one, but neither would I say he should have got one. On the other hand, Brady is in the House of Lords for her services to the dildo barons, which makes Beckham seem quite deserving.

But he is unlikely to get one from the cvnts now.

I don't want to sound like a real miserable sod, but I am not sure sporting excellence is base for a Knighthood

I'm pretty comfortable that major international sporting success is consistent with the history of awarding knighthoods.

Looking at a list of sporting knighthoods, with the exception of cricket, there does seems to be more emphasis on individuals than team sports.

That said, I think Beckham's case would be based on using his sporting profile to benefit charitable causes.

he didn't reach the required sporting level to earn a knighthood and it seems the motive for his charitable work was rather cynical so he doesn't really have any claim for one whatsoever now.

eh, he won the european cup, it's the pinnacle of the sport

all charitable work is cynical, it's not discounted anyone else

team game though innit, he'd need to have been an undisputed great of modern English football (as in Ronaldo to Portugal and Messi to Argentina levels) to be deserving of an honor based on his impact in the sport.

Are you implying that David Sullivan stood in front of Karen Brady whilst she knelt and orally pleasured little Dave, meanwhile David Gold knelt behind Karen, pushing his own little Dave into her back?
Or the reverse?
How dare you? Those chaps have NOTHING to do with that sort of behaviour and have never even seen any magazine images like this.

Thanks for that mental image.

Thanks for that mental image.

It's a hidden chapter on the DVD from when they won all three games against us in a season, you might remember, they had tshirts and mugs made too, like the ones they sell to celebrate them winning the World Cup

Compare Beckham to George Michael for a second; Beckham donated his wages at PSG to charity, admirable it goes without saying but did he really need to hold a press conference to announce it to everyone?

Since George Michael has died, many people have come forward and recounted stories of his benevolence, he donated money to a woman who couldn't afford IVF treatment among other things. He didn't feel the need to make a big song and dance about it.

As Larry David said, "you're either anonymous or you're not". Too many people donate money for the credit rather than simply to help people.
