David Beckham Announces Retirement, Lovely Gesture

Johnny nice-tits
I know he is loaded but its a nice gesture all the same, top bloke

David Beckham has revealed he will donate all the wages from his five-month contract with Paris Saint-Germain to charity. The former England captain, 37, completed his move to the Qatari-owned club after passing a medical in Paris on Thursday morning.

Beckham, who had been a free agent since leaving Los Angeles Galaxy just before Christmas, said: "We've decided on something that's quite unique. I won't receive any salary: we've decided my salary will go towards a local children's charity in Paris and that's one of the things we're very excited and proud to do.

"It's something I'm not sure has been done before but I'm passionate about children and the charity, so we came together and it's something special."

Beckham, who confirmed his wife and children would stay in London, said he felt "very lucky" to have received a host of offers, including that from PSG.

"I'm 37 years old and was offered a lot of offers, more now than I've had in my career, and at my age. I'm honoured by that. I chose Paris because I can see what the club are trying to do, I can see the players the club are bringing in.

"It's an exciting city and always has been but now there' s a club that will have a lot of success over the next 10, 15 and 20 years. I'm not saying I'll be playing in 10, 15 or 20 years but to be part of something that's growing is very exciting to me. I'm very honoured to be part of this."

Beckham added that he had never considered a move to a Premier League club. "I've been successful with Manchester United and have always said I would never want to play for another English club. I've a lot of history with Manchester United, the team I support and dreamed of playing for. Unless it was Manchester United, I wouldn't want to play for any other Premier League team."

Asked what he would bring to the PSG side, Beckham said: "I have a lot of experience, I'm 37 years old, I've won over 13 or 14 championships in my career, played for some of the biggest clubs and with some of the best players in the world.

"I'm still fit, I can still play like I did when I was 21. I've not lost any of my pace because I didn't have any pace. And the lure of being part of one of the biggest European clubs at the moment, with one of the best managers … I was lucky to work with Carlo Ancelotti and [sporting director] Leonardo in Milan and I said it at the time: Carlo is one of the best managers I played for. It's exciting on another level."

Despite the contract being for only five months, Beckham said he expected to be involved with the club beyond the end of his playing career.

"I don't see that it's a short-term contract. It might be a short-term project for me playing but there's a lot happening at this club with these owners. I might have only signed until the end of the season but I consider myself to be part of the future of this club – in helping this club to grow and the French league to grow and to help this club become one of the biggest powerhouses in football."

The France coach, Didier Deschamps, said Beckham's arrival would provide a welcome boost for the profile of Ligue 1. "He's a personality who goes beyond football, like Zlatan Ibrahimovic maybe. They are players who beyond our frontiers give an important visibility to Ligue 1.

"But I won't judge it on a sporting perspective. I'm not the coach, general manager or owner of Paris Saint-Germain. They've made their choice with David Beckham. He's a world football personality."

Cynical..

PSG are using him big time to raise the profile of French footie so there was always going to be a big press conference, he will do a useful job at PSG in the remaining 5 months of the season

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

Someone as cynical as me might even think he's doing it on purpose to boost his own image. :-"

Boost him image, really he is the most recognisable man in the world, his image hardly needs boosting, im seeing the lovely gesture from him

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

Jeez harsh crowd the guy is basically playing for free and giving his wages to a worth children's charity and he still gets people slating him...

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

and me, he's not the only loaded footballer out there, but those that do stuff like this are few and far between

also, he's played for Man Utd, AC Milan, and Real Madrid, married a pop star and hung out with Tom Cruise, signing for a team in the French league is about the most low key thing he's done in his career

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

Would have been a better gesture if he had donated his wages to a uk charity and not a French one though

Part of me agrees with Billy and Jordinho, I mean lets not forget Beckham did announce publicly that he wasn't in the Olympic squad before Pearce had the chance to announce his squad, kinda took all the attention away from the players picked and put it firmly on Beckham. All the same though, this is a top gesture and I commend him for it.

Can't really see him having much of an impact at PSG though, other than through shirt sales.

It's nice to know that not everyone universally adores him. I actually quite like the guy, I just think he was always overrated and didn't get the same stick that the other England players who failed in tournaments got, bar France 98 of course, no one deserves the stick he got after that.

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

I've been one of Beckham's defenders in past years. Having had to cover him on and off the pitch, I've seen him first-hand in several off-camera situations to see he's a pretty genuine person. Puts everyone around at ease, cracks self-deprecating jokes and goes about his business earnestly. Great ambassador for England and English football. But this time, there's a whiff of corporate catfood.

He's signs for PSG. Sponsored by Emirates airlines. Was given heavy publicity in weeks prior training for Arsenal wearing their goofy training shirts that also bear the same airline logo. This is a deal that was well orchestrated.

PSG are gonna sell a trainload of shirts. Ligue Unh! are gonna reap a ton of useful publicity. Beckham will come across as even more lovable and adorable(I'M MOVING, JERRY!). And someone's scoring a huge tax write-off when it's all said and and done, while at the same time, the club can use all this accelerated financial activity to conform to FFP regs and spend even more money.

Fully expect Victoria to pop up with a Parisian fashion-related endeavour very soon.

Not cynical. Just know how these deals really work.

Top post.

PSG are doing this mainly so they meet the FFP guidelines.

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

if he signed for West Ham or some other two bob Club in England and waived his wages there would be a whole lot less to be cynical about, but signing for the latest Arab Money Club in such an obvious PR move just has me rolling my eyes at it all.

Brand Beckham will be getting a lot more than a sense of pride at helping out a charity in all of this

good news for whichever charity ends up with the money - will be interesting to see just exactly where it does go

Re: David Beckham, Lovely Gesture

With the tax rate Hollande wants, its not so impressive.

Of course there is some self-serving and sponsor-serving publicity involved, but some serious money will go to charity that wouldn't otherwise. That is much better than him just keeping it. A nice gesture and good PR.

Doesn't make sense. He Is not earning his salary in England, so why would he donate to a UK charity?
