I keep seeing people writing him off as just a squad player. I really think folks are going to be surprised by just how much he plays next season - and by where he plays.
Because he's not going to play as a deep-lying midfielder - he's a No.10 by trade, and it's where he'll play, imo.
Gallagher suffers from the same issue Anthony Gordon runs into - neither fit the conventional definition of a valuable player, and so people are quick to write them off while ignoring the one attribute that makes them very valuable in the modern game.
There's a reason Hansi Flick made Barca pay 85m for Gordon, and it's the same reason we pay Gallagher 200k a week - they are elite-level pressers. They lead the press from the front, their tempo setting the tone for the rest of the side - and they have the stamina, strength and pace to keep it up for 90 minutes straight.
Pressing is now the sine qua non of the modern game, and players good at pressing are valuable. Managers and clubs see this, even if fans don't, yet.
Everything I see with our squad building tells me we're setting up to operate in a way where our creativity comes from deeper, from the #6 and #8, and from the wings - while Gallagher will largely lead the press and make late runs into the box from the 10 slot, which was part of what made his breakout season at Palace so successful.
It's just my hunch - but it's one I think stands a decent chance of happening.
