25/26 Injury and illness thread

Think they did a review last season didn’t they? But yea agree, something’s up, 3 straight years of full on injury crisis under 2 different managers feels a bit too unlucky for there not to be something behind it. Other clubs have struggled similarly for individual years, but not every year..
Partly is a waterfall effect where having 5 of our best players out mean the others are forced to play every minute until they themselves get injured.
E.g. we could all see that Kudus was going to get an injury eventually as he played every game with 3 men hanging off his back, until he snapped.

I do wonder if our "state of the art elite beautiful grass pitches at the training ground" are harder and tighter with a denser surface or something.

This, complicated by the imbalance of the CL squad.

Said it earlier, starting the season with 6 players out has effectively meant we couldn't recover.

Stupid from Porro losing the ball there

Well they need to review their review then because it was brick looking at the outcome and not thorough enough.

Yeah, once you get a couple of injuries then things tend to snowball out of control; especially if you lose a couple of first team players before the packed Christmas schedule which puts a strain even on healthy squads.

The fact that 2 consecutive managers over a 3 year period are suffering the same issues does beg the question of whether there’s something inherent about our new facilities.

Also don’t help having such a precipitous drop off in quality between our first XI and their back-ups due to our poorly assembled squad; as we saw with Ange having to save MvdV and Romero for the latter stages of EL (even though it meant our PL form dropped off a cliff) and now the night & day difference that Solanke’s hold-up play made to the team compared to want-away Muani and young Tel who tries his best but is years away from being a top 6 level CF. Plus the ridiculous situation of having Udogie as our only proper LB aside from elderly Ben as emergency cover.

I'm not sure. ACLs snap when you get your boot stuck or land badly. There's no association to wear in anyway I don't think.

A much bigger issue is players wearing blades rather than studs. That massively increases the probability of ACLs and other injuries - there's been quite a lot of academic research on that. I'd be interested to know how many of our 4 recent ones were blade wearers.
Ligaments do get strained and worn though, and that will affect how well they hold up when you put real pressure on them. If our pitch surfaces makes increased strain likely, surely that could be an element.

This isn't my field of expertise at all, like I said, so it could be BS. But IMO it sounds plausible enough for the club to look into it, which I hope they have. It's not only the ACLs, but plenty other injuries.

Blades or studs could absolutely be a factor too, agreed on that.

Vic, Kinsky
Porro, Udogie, Spence
Romero, VDV, Danso, Dragusin
Palhinha, Gray, Gallagher, Biss, Sarr, Xavi
Solanke, Muani, Odobert, Tel

Whatever the injury crisis is or isn't, we still have 19 senior players available this weekend. 3 of of them were ineligible for the CL game and are fresh. Ditto with Sarr hopefully.

We have 2 players Udogie and Solanke to keep an eye on as they've recent returnees. We then have Palhinha and Xavi not 100%, assuming Gray now is.

It's not the worst state of affairs we've seen.

Definitely in a better place than a few days ago in the CL.

Agreed, and to me the available squad looks balanced. There should be enough players in each position to create some competition for places and therefore performances. Perhaps the exception is Xavi where it would be great to have Kulu back in the mix. Then there is the unknown quantity in Souza as well.

Perhaps we haven't always bought quality but there is no doubt that our squad is chalk and cheese from where we were in the past.

Re Xavi I think we should rest him, that swelling looked nasty and I reckon Gallagher can play that role but in a different way. I know everyone talks about Gallagher like he’s a 6/8 type player but for me he’s much more of an 8/10 type. He can play that 10 role similar to how Sarr did earlier in the season but probably with a bit more quality.

Yeah, it's a great call.

The only thing I don't know is what (or can remember from playing days) is what the cycle of recovery looks like. I do remember a phase where the ankle looks a whole lot worse than it actually is. That is where the bruising colouration drops but the swelling is still up. These always make great photos as we've seen with the club this week. From memory the dangerous part is when that protective swelling goes down and the mobility comes back again.

I think you're right though. In a tough away game, it's not a bad thing to have Palhinha, Gray and Gallagher on the pitch. The latter definitely excelled on his loans spells further forward. I also think we can then tell Tel and Odobert to just go for it and not worry about losing the ball so much.

Agreed. Though with the caveat that I wouldn't want the two players behind him to be Palhinha and Sarr. Gray or Bissouma need to be in there for a touch of ball progression through the middle under pressure.

The Burnley game will be a good indicator of our balance of Frank under pressure and managing players

- Porro, Xavi, Solanke, Udogie should all not start in my opinion, too much risk
- Gallagher, Biss, Tel, Sarr, Danso, Odobert all have the least milage and should be used.
- Didn't sound like Palhinha is ready

How can this be true? They said we have 7 out of our 9 midfielders injured. We have Biss, Sarr, Gallagher, Gray and perhaps Palhinha fit tomorrow. Xavi is recovering but playing.

I guess their 7 are Madds, Kulu, Bents. Palhinha, Bergval, Simons, Kudus.

If they've included Kudus whey don't they count Odobert who is playing that position?
