The *WHEN* we go down thread

Good to see so many of you coming to your senses and getting on the train I boarded ages ago! I think, at present, relegation is more than 50% certain. If we can somehow beat Palace tomorrow then we probably move that back to a 50-50 coin toss. It is clear though that the rest of the...

    Remember that penalty against Bentancur...

You tend to actually need to have touches in the opponents box to be awarded penalties. The only way we could earn penalties is from long throws, corners or our hoofs towards the far side of the box when we get free kicks anywhere in the opposition half (or even in our own half near the half...

If we're playing 3 at the back and wing backs then I would absolutely go with Souza. If we're playing a back 4 then I think I'd look to have another physical player in there so use VDV.

The Overlap - some interesting comments from Ange

He's hardly going to say "I really don't care about the league, we're just going for the Cup" while the season is still going on is he?

We kind of did. If you think we were playing the same gung-ho attacking football last season that we were the season before then we were seeing different things. As the season went on our football became less and less expansive. After the wins against Brentford and Man Utd, we were clearly...

I think his one on one defending out wide would be fine and his pace would be an asset against wide forwards. He is pretty poor with his positioning, which I think is less of an issue at full back then it is centrally. He has a left foot so can progress the ball down the line (either by...

OMT - Fulham vs Tottenham Hotspur

Can think of Romero, VDV, Udogie, Maddison and Kulusevski off the top of my head.

    Guglielmo Vicario

His positioning in general looked poor for that second goal. He seemed to be covering too much of his near post.

    Xavi Simons

I think he could have a role in a 3-4-1-2 type formation, with him having a free role in the middle. Something like…. ———————- Vic ——Romero—-Danso—- VDV Porro——Gray——-Paulina——Souza ———————Xavi ———Solanke——-Richarlison Though even here we might be better off with Gallagher’s industry...

The Overlap - some interesting comments from Ange

It’s a fallacy that he played the whole game parking the bus. We actually started with quite a high line. We dropped off and played deeper after going one up and we eventually settled into a low block as the game progressed in the second half.

Not true. We beat both Man Utd and Brentford in the PL playing defensive, counter attacking football. Those wins basically guaranteed our PL position the following year and we (management and players) then clearly prioritised the Europa.

    These jokers…

There’s always a team that starts the league quite well and then drops like a stone. After 10 games or so I thought that was going to be Sunderland as opposed to us!

It was definitely a 4. I agree about Gray at LB. We’d be better playing VDV there and moving Gray central.

    Mikey Moore

I watched the second half. I think he had the grand total of about 4 touches

The Overlap - some interesting comments from Ange

We had nothing at all to play for in the league once we'd beaten Brentford and Man Utd. When players have nothing to play for in one competition and everything to play for in another it is also natural for players to try to ensure they don't get injured in the games where there is effectively...

The Overlap - some interesting comments from Ange

I think the league got completely sacked off once we'd got the two wins (against Brentford and Man Utd) that basically meant we were safe by anything other than mathematics.

Which do you think are unrealistic (especially considering the big money that some of these players are on and we will be desperate to get off of the wage bill).

I don't think Muani pushed Gabriel. Sure, he put his hands on his back but there was no push there. I think Ekitike may have given Romero a very slight push but had got up above him and the goal standing was probably right. Whatever one thinks about whether or not these should be goals or...
