I suspect the truth is somewhere in between here - a duo of Wanyama and Bentaleb would be pretty good. It's a defensively solid duo, reasonably comfortable on the ball, with a reasonable ability to get the ball forward. That's a decent start. Wanyama, of course, could be better on the ball...

I'm surprised - in my mind, we need a very strong defensive presence in the middle, as a priority, rather than a Modric type. Would, in your opinion, a Cabaye and Mason/Bentaleb partnership be defensively strong enough or would we then need to buy another midfielder as well? Obviously, this...

It's an interesting one. On the few occasions I've seen Cabaye, he's never struck me as a defensive midfielder. Is that fair? On that basis, I think it was the correct decision to not pursue him, as we very much need someone predominantly defensive minded - and we already have Bentaleb and...

    General Transfer Rumour Discussion Thread

I don't think you can describe Mason as "highly effective". Equally, Dembele is clearly not "twice the player" Mason is. They're very different - Dembele is good at muscling in and winning the ball (and very little else), whereas Mason is good at quickly moving the ball (and very little else).

I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

We can only hope. Son, Chadli, Eriksen and N'Jie sound quite an interesting blend of options for the wings.

Of course - but we're looking at two players who have so little to offer. My only point is that at least Townsend brings the ball forward well. I don't see that Lamela offers anything.

Just by looking, really. No need to overcomplicate things. Carrying the ball forward without losing it isn't one of the more controversial/subjective football topics. My position is that: a. Townsend is very good at this; b. It's a relatively useful skill; c. It's one more useful skill than...

I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

I think he is. Townsend offers something specific - bringing the ball forward extremely quickly and effectively. That's not much, but at least it's something. Lamela brings nothing to the team. His workrate is ostensibly useful, but he just bumps into players or makes very poorly timed...

'Traditional' in the sense he's a right footed player that plays on the right. I think, over time, his crossing got to a reasonable standard. Granted, you'd not see pacey, whipped crosses of any quality from him, but his chipped crossing was reasonable and cutbacks very good. Remember how...

    OMT*** Tottenham Hotspur vs. Everton *** 29/08/2015 - 5:30pm

Just get the basics right, seriously: 1. Vertonghen out - he's terrible - Dier in; 2. Lamela out - he's terrible - Townsend in (it's come to that, good grief); 3. Dembele off the wing and into a defensive midfield position to add some physicality; 4. Some mobility around Dembele, given his...

When Townsend is by far the better option, you know you're in trouble.

The "we don't play with wingers" argument doesn't work for me - you need variation. It' s no good seeing Lamela attempt and fail to find space by cutting inside, only to replace him with Dembele or Townsend, who'll do exactly the same thing. In any case, I'd rather have a good traditional...

I'd have to disagree with that. We don't have another winger who hugs the touchline - that alone is valuable, both in the sense of stretching the play, but also the ability to actually deliver crosses from the wing position. Chadli, Lamela, Townsend and Dembele all look to come inside...
