25/26 Injury and illness thread

Another Tottenham player who’ll be missing the World Cup due to injury… no wonder Muani can’t wait to get back to PSG rather than risk ending up like Simons, Maddison, Kudus, Odobert and Kulusevski.

Current injuries...Maddison, Deki, Romero, Kudus, Odobert, Xavi, Vicario, Solanke, Sarr, Udogie

We haven't been able to field our strongest side once this season; not even close. No-one in our position could survive IMO, and if we do make it, for me, it will be a bigger achievement than whoever wins the title.
 
This has been floating around social media;

Spurs haven’t gone 2 weeks during the season without a new injury since March 2023. 3 years of ACL injury after shoulder injury after hamstring injury. One player comes back and 2 are injured. For 3 years straight. Normally long term too.

I don't know if it is totally accurate but sure feels like it could be.
 
I’m 50/50 on whether there is a common factor at work here, anything from recruitment, through recovery and treatment protocols, to the retractable pitch, or whether this is just what at least one club should expect if injury is distributed across clubs according to normal probabilities, and there is no point hunting for a Lucy Letby style scape-goat.

Footballers are a superstitious lot, though. Nobody who only takes to the pitch in their lucky pants after listening to their lucky song is going to feel too comfortable joining a club which has injury stats like this.
 
The two most likeliest causes of injury by far is physical stress and mental stress.

This team (and all footballers) have endured a big uptick in physical stress BUT no other team has had the level of mental stress this team has had, and has.

The compounding effect of losing is intense.
Playing for a team that isn't 'meant' to be relegation material is intense. (Playing for Leeds, West Ham, Forest etc...yeah, you know it could be something you're caught up in)
Playing for 2 seasons in front of a home crowd that feels like it hates you, disgusted by you. Intense.

I agree with the stress issue and I'm sure we've all seen it effect the performance of friends and work colleagues over the years, it's a real test of character and a problem I've felt the club has had for a few years, plenty of good players but how many could you rely on when the going got tough. It's hard for young players in these situations as they rely on strong leaders to set an example and we just don't have them.

What causal mechanism are you suggesting by which “mental stress” would cause ACL injuries?

Nope, not having that at all. Mental stress may possibly change the way that patients report or think about pain, but it’s absolutely irrelevant to musculoskeletal impact damage.

Relegation fears and a nasty crowd may well have a significant impact on player behaviour and micro-choices on the pitch, resulting in physical damage, but that’s as far as it goes.
 
Never known an injury issue like this, especially over a sustained period. However, I don’t think it’s as simple as pointing at one reason for it. Easy to say it’s the medical team’s fault when we’re not seeing the work they do, but there are freak injuries that they can’t be blamed for such as Romero.

Going back as far as a Conte he was highlighting an issue with the medical department though. Have they been replaced since then?

Are you talking about the people who plonk their tailbones down on seats and then hunch over keyboards to stare at their screens? The ones in particularly stressful and demanding roles, who therefore don’t get up and walk around too often, who don’t have kindly employers that spring for ergonomically designed furniture? Those ones?

Yes, they should definitely sort their unhelpful thoughts out, they might get bad backs.

Yes I'm talking about people doing very little physically but ending up with bad backs, necks, shoulders, wrists etc.

If you don't believe mental stress, pressure etc can manifest as real physical pain and injury, so be it.
 
Would be interesting to see a comparison with other clubs, to see how far below everyone else we are.

Look at that attacking talent. No wonder we're a bit pants. Do that to any team and they will suck.
