I agree.
Of course, some of our fans showed their colours in this regard too, absolutely berating Dier far far beyond rationality. I'll say this. If we had him at the club this season, we would have avoided the collapses IMO. Might not be top 6 but we would not be in the terrible position we are; a proper leader!

You have to be at a certain level in terms of performance to be a leader though Steff. Dier is nowhere near that. Don’t necessarily have to be the best player in the team or squad, but you can’t be near the bottom.

I'm still not sure where you're getting this genius/masterplan idea from:D Maybe I've missed it discussed elsewhere.

Ive just said the facts - we had an injury crisis. Injury crisis finished. At this point obvious no chance of Europe via league. Only opportunity to qualify for Europe is via EL. Our big players all return from injury. Said players scarcely used in league games and a real mixture starting elevens are played in PL games. Strongest team picked in EL knockout games.

Just prioritising to try and make something out of the season....

We have only played 2 knockout rounds post group stages and looking at the AZ games we played comparable XIs across those two fixtures and the surrounding league games.

We saw today why Danso isn't the answer to any of our questions. I think Romero is only showing up for EL games, mentally too.
We did. But Danso was playing better. It's like with Poch...he played Mason and Bentaleb in midfield over Dembele and Paulinho etc. Better players? No, but, was their application, professionalism and hunger superior? Yes. It was a point. Match them in those aspects and you'll get back in. Dembele did. Others were shipped out.

We were also screaming out for depth, you can't have 4 CBs all of the same quality, it does not exist

You have just proven my point. 'Near the bottom'? Laughable...

Sorry how have I proven your point mate? Yes I stand by that view Dier had become one of the players from the Poch era that had been underperforming for a number of years and needed to go. And I wouldn’t have blamed him if he didn’t want to hang around and warm the bench at his age.

Yes we did because we were down to the bare bones for the most of the league stage. For both knockout games since most/literally all of our squad had returned (and at this stage apparent we was not going to get anywhere in the league) key players were rested in the league and put in for the EL games. Like I said, the evidence is clear by the fact there are next to no games with our first choice eleven playing in the league over the past couple of months - even just our first choice back 5.....
I know I sound like a broken record mate, but I still maintain he needed to play his first choice 11 in the league and rotate them in and out. He has lots of options. He did not need to field "weakened teams."

The bigger picture if he gave a brick, was for him to show we could be a well drilled team with our first 11 in place ready for next season

It's a litany of excuses that seem to be made for this guy. 19 losses, a 50% loss rate over the season. Loss basically to anyone competent and he has normalized losing.

Ange may win a weak Europa League (although I'm still not convinced he will as there is still a reasonably competent side in Bilbao), but based on the league form, it would be a huge gamble to keep him on as manager. He hasn't given us a chance to see that his system can work.

We were doing crap before the "injury crisis". We've done crap after.

It would be interesting to compare the 2 sets of results. For me the pivot was the Utd game. That win was the first time I saw a deep squad again.

Before and after that game would be a great comparison.

38 games in a season. We've only played 34. Our loss rate is 55.8% the worst in our entire history.

Yeah absolutely. Not sure anyone is making excuses for him at this point though....

Beyond the initial 10 game spike in results.......its been shambolic. I have never known a manager given so much rope and excuses in my life.

I watched Bournemouth with 11 players out smash Saudi Sportswashing Machine away, Saudi Sportswashing Machine who went on to win the Cup versus Liverpool the PL Champs.............and many of our fans believe we are beyond coaching results against Ipswich, Wolves, Leicester and Fulham

Honestly it's irrelevant what he does in the EL. There's no way the board are going to risk another season like this one. We've lost over £30 million from last season due to our league finish....

They cannot contemplate that gamble
We need him to win the CL and leave with that on his CV

Assume you mean EL but yeah- it's the only way he can claw back some credibility- he can wave the trophy in everyone's faces and point to the injury list for our league troubles and can potentially sucker another club in to giving him a contract

Yeah of course
Should have been qualify for the CL which is what I was thinking
And the players bonus for that is huge im sure
They would get a trophy winning bonus and a CL qualification one
