Mathys Tel

It was very widely reported by the bbc and others... what am I missing here?

Has any team won three promotions in a row?
AI Overview
Yes, Wrexham AFC made history in April 2025 by becoming the first team in the top five tiers of English football to achieve three consecutive promotions, a "back-to-back-to-back" promotion from non-league to the Championship under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. While other teams have achieved three successive promotions, some being league champions, Wrexham's feat was particularly remarkable as it was the first time a club had achieved this in England's top five divisions.

I doubt there is any scenario whereby Tel would have agreed to sign for us if he thought he would not be in the UCL squad.

He had to show his worth on the pitch tbf. So far it has to be said he has been underwhelming and unlike other positions there is a lot of competition where he plays.
Hopefully it's a kick up the backside that we benefit from long-term

Its been foreseeable for a long time that we'd have about half-a-dozen players over our limit. The Muani signing obviously screwed him, but the injuries to Maddison and Takai also helped him.

But my point is still

Nah, he would rightly have thought that if we wanted to sign him permanently, we obviously thought he was good enough for the UCL squad. If he was not good enough we should not have signed him.

Typically poor Spurs squad management.

Same principle applies to academy players signing contracts.... at the end of the day, he is at a club where you are (or should be) picked only if you are better than whoever is in front of you.... and at the moment there is no sign of that. If he cannot take that heat, then his place in not in the kitchen...

Are there many clubs that actively pick players that are worse than other options in the club?

It still seems quite early to be declaring where his place is (kitchen or otherwise), but I'm fairly sure Tel will show his worth this season. Plenty of minutes to go around and as we've seen with Spence, not getting picked for a European squad isn't the death knell it's made out to be. The young man looks to have the right attitude and can be fresh to give it all in league games if he takes his chances.

My point is that we should not have splashed £30m on a player deemed not good enough for the CL squad.

Perfectly in agreement... if (hopefully when) he does show his worth and ability more than the current incumbent, then I am sure he will be chosen accordingly...

Again I say, it is a flawed transfer strategy if you spend £30m on a player not good enough for the CL squad.

We have some potential 60 games in league and cups... to sign a promising young & inexperienced player who can contribute to those 60 games and improve sufficiently to be eventually top notich for CL is anything but a bad decision... especially for a fee which is 15 mill less than Everton paid for an equally raw and untested talent ....

That's the nature of going for younger talents I guess. It seems in an odd spot in regards to CL squads, honestly trying to follow the conversations on here about it is tedious because it's rife with either legacy understanding or just plain misinformation. I'm just going to hope we're shaping the squad in such a way that means we don't have to leave talented players out of the squad, unless absolutely necessary.

It's a pretty open position isn't it? I wouldn't really say anyone has it locked down. I'm a big fan of Richy out on the left (but I would be wouldn't I!), Odobert will be wanting to make an impression too and Muani can also allegedly play to his strength out there too. That's without mentioning Johnson who is currently playing out there (by choice of a manager who knows a lot more about football than his naysayers).

It's handy to have options to adapt, adaptability seemingly being Frank's calling card. I think in 60 game seasons, this idea of a fixed best XI holds even less value than it did before..

So Muani, Richie, Odebert, Tel and Johnson can all be deployed on the left wing yet we were still sign Silvinho for that position. hey ho.

I think the kid has a great opportunity to prove his worth with this decision, he could be exclusively used on and off in the league and see himself have a great run in the LC side.........with that comes major opportunities to shine

Feels like you're being a tad binary in terms of viewing the options, Richy and Muani primarily are strikers, BJ has played most of his football on the right and Tel + Odobert are still finding their best positions. Having versatile players isn't a bad thing as long as the manager can get the most out of them, and we're not bedded to playing one up top.

And I don't remember hearing we were officially in for Savinho nor which position we were hoping he'd play. I could be way off the mark but are you not happy about the club wanting to bring in quality players and generally having cover across all positions / competition for minutes?
