Brennan Johnson

I have to admit, I feel like I have been fairly neutral about him. You can't argue with his goal return but I thought we needed a player that has more (and honestly, Kudus is kind of showing that), but in this system, it's about having different tools to break down defenses. With that said, I'm appreciating him a lot more since last season and he's someone that can have an insane goal return again with the way we are currently playing.

I am wondering if Frank will play Johnson on the right once in a while just so we don't become too predictable, as Kudus will need a rest at some point.

If we had 3 Kudus’s as a front 3 we would look awesome but scoring goals would be an issue (kudus does score goals)
We need variety, options and players who do what’s asked
Clearly Johnson deke what is asked of him because the manager pick him
Goals are the rarest commodity in a sport with such a low margin of victory
Should never ever be under estimated

It’s still frustrating watching him check and cut back rather than take on his man. He did it a few times yesterday. But I can’t argue with his ability to be in the right place at the right time to score goals. I don’t care whether they are taps ins, worldies or scuffed attempts. Until we have someone else who can do the same, he has an important role to play for us.

Goals like yesterday might appear fairly simple, but watch his run - he had to bust a gut to get into that position....

I'm not saying BJ is worth a goal a game (or that he makes zero contribution other than scoring goals), but hypothetically speaking, would you, as a manager, take a one goal start if it meant playing the whole game with 10 men?

I think …‘I know …. Managers look at 11 players when they pick their team
I also think fans see things that managers and coaches, knowing what they have asked, will see things differently

My nephew is now working at derby but did some work for Bournemouth. His sole role as analysis for 5 games was analysing missed runs and straight runs for the first 60 minutes

That gave the manager and coaches data on missed opportunities for passes and …. Who was doing what was asked. His job wasn’t to refine who did what but to show it

We don’t know what Brennan or anyone else is saving asked to do as fans. We make assumptions based on our own preferences and biases. I think, simply put a manager will look at the outcome that a player gives as a BIG metric in their analysis

johnson is looking more and more like a speed-merchant and a one trick pony
can't tackle doesn't head but can run fast and has a great first touch to score

surely upgradeable and i hope we can do something like liverpool and sell him while his stock is still high

Upgrade with?
All the players we have been linked with aRe very good
None have got near to his goal tally
How do you replace that?
We can create millions of chances but if no one puts it away it don’t matter

Personally I think it’s beneficial to us to have players with different strengths in the team. BJ is a clinical finisher and a proven goalscorer - he's very good at it - and that's one piece of the Tottenham jigsaw.

Obviously I'd prefer him to also have Kudus' ability to take on players, the defensive strength of Paulinha and Sarr's engine, but that player wouldn't be with us for long, to put it that way. Likewise it would be great if Kudus could be more clinical in front of goal or if Sarr was quicker and better at dribbling, but worrying about that is just a distraction from what they actually bring to the team.

BJ brings goals and assists, and as long as he can keep doing it on a regular basis, I don't really care about his weaknesses.

Funny thing, some people love slagging Johnson off, and they love to ignore the fact that no other current player at the club has scored as many goals as him. He has scored 25 goals for us, and Kulu is in second place with 20.

Don't think it's either or, I'm not watching this season thinking he's a liability, so Frank has cracked the code (so far)

true and i didn't say now
there are players out there who can offer more in the total game

liverpool sold coutinho and upgraded well - why can't we do likewise? the upside is that johnson can fetch a decent amount so we can strengthen the squad with better quality skills in one or more areas.

the way we play - whoever comes in will score goals. who would have thought kulu would score so many goals when we bought him.

Just to be clear, I'm very happy with BJ and I do think Frank is using him a little differently, but that's with the benefit of having Kudus in the team.
Even if we're in low-block mode, I'd expect Johnson to be waiting on the shoulder of a defender ready to make a sprint forward. I really think he's our best finisher when 1v1 with the keeper. Maybe Maddison? All I ask for is that he keep doing what he's doing and continue improving, as I do feel like he's a good fit under Frank to develop further.
